Building Frame on Nutanix hardware for on campus private cloud learning desktops

I am Robby Daniels the Xi Frame administrator at Creighton University in Omaha Nebraska. We are doing a proof of concept project to provide full Windows 10 pro VDI desktops for three of our eight colleges here at the university. We have been using "Classic Frame" hosted on AWS for two and a half years hosted in a AWS data center in Ohio. Our only issue has been network response time to and from the hosting sites. What our goal is to run all of the VDI network traffic on our LAN network. We will be using Nutanix hardware only running 4 node cluster to support XI Frame instances only. If it works out great we will be replacing lots of PC high end custom hardware / software systems with XI Frame DaaS / VDI full desktops. I would like to invite you all to chime in on any XI Frame insights you may have as this will be a game changer! Go Jays! Go Nutanix!

VMware App Volumes - Storage

We plan to implement VMware App Volumes in our View Horizon VDI. In the Nutanix solution design example they use separate datastores/containers for Desktops, App Stacks and Writeable volumes. Is there any advantage in creating separate datastores or can all use one single datastore? Also is there any advantage in enabling compression on the VM container, except for saving space?

CCL Nutanix for VDI CPU spikes 100% frequently

I have a Nutanix running more than 10 Nodes in a vmware cluster Nuatix for VDI environment and CPU spikes 100% frequently - would like to know why CPU is spiking 100% everyday, underlying is Nutanix hence need to troubleshoot somewhere the other way is cause of this high cpu usgae Hypervisor VMware ESX 6.0 Update3 Environment production VMs affected VDI

AHV MCS Plugin 2.5.1.0 and Citrix 7.1906.2

Having an issue updating the Nutanix AHV MCS Plugin. I have a Citrix farm that has been upgraded to 7.1906 and I downloaded the latest AHV MCS plugin 2.5.1.0 from Dec 2019. When executing the msi it recognizes the previous version and states it will update. then the install fails saying Citrix XenDesktop 7.9 or higher is required. This farm was previously 7.15 CU3. I also tried to uninstall the Nutanix Acropolis MCS Plugin version 1.0.0.0 that is on the server and it fails to uninstall as well with same message.  Any helpful hints or suggestions appreciated.

Citrix client connection hook

I was trying to figure out if there is an option by which a web hook can be called when a Citrix client connects or disconnects a VDI. For example when a user connects the VDI from his thin client, the infrastructure should notify the hook using an HTTP call with information including the thin client's computer name, the user connected etc. Could someone tell me if this is possible?

Create 4k disk for vm

Is there a way (or even supported) to create a 4k disk for a VM? I am testing some situations and didn't know if there was a way to specify sector sizes when creating a new disk for a vm.

Configuring a Virtual NIC to Operate in Access or Trunk Mode

By default, a virtual NIC on a guest VM operates in access mode. In this mode, the virtual NIC can send and receive traffic only over its own VLAN, which is the VLAN of the virtual network to which it is connected. If restricted to using access mode interfaces, a VM running an application on multiple VLANs (such as a firewall application) must use multiple virtual NICs—one for each VLAN. Instead of configuring multiple virtual NICs in access mode, you can configure a single virtual NIC on the VM to operate in trunk mode. A virtual NIC in trunk mode can send and receive traffic over any number of VLANs in addition to its own VLAN. You can trunk specific VLANs or trunk all VLANs. You can also convert a virtual NIC from the trunk mode to the access mode, in which case the virtual NIC reverts to sending and receiving traffic only over its own VLAN.

Same version of BMC & Version in one cluster?

Hallo All,I have an issue with memory CECC error. There were a Memory CECC error a month ago. so I replaced the part. and then 2 weeks after, the Same error occured at the same slot.so now I will upgrade the BMC & BIOS on these Node.but. should the same version of bmc & BIOS in all Nodes be in one cluster?Thanks :)p.s : there are 29 node with NX-3060-G4 and G5 in dark site

Horizon View Instant Clone & Nutanix Firmware updates....Sanity check..

We have been running our Horizon View environment on Nutanix a little over 6 months, and I'm ready to do my first round of disk/BIOS, etc firmware updates. My main concern, is since we are utilizing Horizon View instant clones, there is a powered on "parent image" on each host...We are running View 7.5, and I know in previous versions, there was an attribute called "Instant Clone maintenance" that you changed the value to a 1, and it would shut down and delete that parent image, disallowing any desktops from being provisioned on that host allowing you to place it in maint mode, and do your business. I need some clarity (and a sanity check!) on how to allow (or if I don't use LCM) to perform these necessary firmware updates without bringing my View environment down...This environment is used 24x7 and cannot withstand an outage..Please show me your wheel, so I have no need to re-invent!! Thank you community!

Fault Tolerant Horizon View VDI Architecture

I wanted to engage the community to share our fault tolerant Nutanix powered VMware Horizon VDI design and architecture in the hopes it will open some dialog and potentially assist other customers as they venture into this effort. I would be remiss to dive into the design without sharing some background information. I work for a quasi-governmental airport authority that employs a relatively small team of six dedicated IT staff. Because we are designing a solution for an airport, fault tolerance and high availability is an absolute must. Some of our desktops are mission critical, life safety machines. The desktop systems in this cluster support our fire department, police department and airport operations. With our datacenters on a campus surrounded daily by hundreds of swarming planes flying at low altitudes, we spend a lot of time designing our infrastructure. Citrix Applayering and Prism Central 5.5 issues

Specs: Citrix App Layering Version: 4.11 AOS: 5.5 Prism Central: 5.5 We are running into an issue when creating new app layers and platform layers after upgrading to 5.5. If I disconnect our clusters from prism central, the creation process works. The app layering appliance appears to have issues creating a packaging VM on the nutanix clusters as prism central is now managing the CRUD operations, as opposed to being managed strictly by the cluster. The error message we get in app layering is: The Nutanix server has encountered a failure processing the request: (500) Error: Internal Server Error, Details: Error occurred while creating Disk Image I'm not the most familiar with the low end nutanix platform, and where to search for logs, but it appears to be caused by the centralized image managed, or the centralized VM management function of prism. AHV + Unidesk(now Citrix App Layering) performance

I was wondering if anyone has used Unidesk on AHV? I am up to date on both (Unidesk 4.6, not 4.7). It takes about 45 minutes to edit a layer, then another 45 to finalize, frequently longer. Data rates are usually between 80 megabytes/s and 120 megabytes/s. The rates will spike up to 1.5 gigabit, and I have looked into the link rate, which shows as 10gbit in the console. I don't think it is hitting a 1 gbit barrier (unless there is traffic management within nutanix I am not aware of). What I have investigated: Link Speed - referenced the link speed in the prism network UI, shows correct, also spikes above 1 gbit regularly, occasionally holds above 1 gbit by a bit Load - I have also tested this when the cluster is under load and when it isn't. This doesn't have discernable impact on the performance. Multiple jobs - I have started multiple jobs in the Unidesk console, the total write speed was about the same as when it is doing a single job, and after about 6 simultaneous jobs it starte

Thoughts & Recommendation for multiple NICs, VMware ESX servers, & Nutanix

We are in the process of evaluating HCI Platforms. We plan to run VMware ESX server on Nutanix HCI for a VDI solution. Currentlty running VDI solution on Citrix and Cisco UCS now. The end solution will support roughly 3000 - 5000 users. I would like to get any thoughts and recommendations on the topic of the number of 10-GB NICs to have on the Nutanix HCI platform, per node. Most HCI platforms are sold with two physical NICs. Obviously, this makes it hard when using multiple NIC's in VMware to protect important traffic - specifically, the management and IP storage traffic. Where in UCS there might be 6-8 NICs on an ESX server - 2 x for Mgmt, 2 x for vMotion, 2 x for IP Storage, and 2 x for Guest VMs - this gets consolidated on to two NICs in a Nutanix node. I understand this will work, but, is it a better practice to use multiple and separate physical NICs in Nutanix to isolate VMware traffic and functions to ensure each function has bandwidth? Citrix MCS shadow clones on Metro Availability

Hi guys, finally after 6 years I can update our XenApp farm from 6 on win2k8R2 to 7.15 LTSR on Win2k12R2. I've read this good post of how Citrix MCS or PVS can leverage the Nutanix shadow clones: https://next.nutanix.com/t5/Nutanix-Connect-Blog/Citrix-MCS-and-PVS-on-Nutanix-Enhancing-XenDesktop-VM/ba-p/3489 My enviroment is 2 Nutanix cluster on metro availability on 1 vmware stretched cluster. The question is, how MCS can works in this scenario? I need 2 master image, one per Nutanix cluster? Because with only one master image I can't leverage the caching/data locality of the VM in the second cluster and vice versa. Thanks!

New Nutanix nodes for Horizon View 7 environment

I am ready to proceed with a new Nutanix cluster consist of 4 nodes. I am a bit confused on containers , NFS, and VMFS. To run an effective View 7 environment on this new cluster, 1. Should I Create Containers and present them to ESXi ? (This will be NFS) 2. Should I create ISCSI Volumes? is that supported? 3. Any additional suggestions? We have been running a solidview environment for a few years in a traditional ESXi hosts with linked clones and persistent and non persistent Virtal desktops. Thnak you for any help in advanced. Horizon View on AHV, is support possible?

I currently have a 10 seat Horizon View Enterprise 7.2 POC and I am currently using ESXi. I would really like to switch to AHV but from my understanding this would not be supported by VMWare correct? If not surely others are running Horizon View on AHV and if so how are they dealing with any support issues they may encounter with Horizon problems? My second hiccupp would be that I am a Dell XC customer so I guess if I had any Horizon problems then I guess they would relay the support case to Nutanix?

Citrix PVS Support for AHV

Hello, i think about Citrix PVS on Nutanix All-Flash Blocks with Acropolis Hypervisor. But there is no offical support for AHV, which means that i have to run VMware or Hyper-V on my Nutanix Cluster to use PVS. -> http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX202032 Is there any roadmap for this?

Citrix XD 7.13 / vCenter / Prism - MCS fails to create catalog.

Hi guys, Deploying full clone VDI on XD 7.13 with Studio linked to the vCenter appliance (5.5 u3e). Prism (5.02) sits behind that on Dell boxes with vSphere environment on top of that. New environment. All storage containers/nodes/etc have unique names. We don't have an issue deploying targets in vCenter manually. We have all the XD infrastructure components running without issue. If we create a new MCS catalog, the VMDKs get copied during the , but right after the copy of the base disk to the data store, the MCS wizard fails. VMware Horizon Async DR

Hi,we are running 20 Nutanix Nodes with AOS 5.0.1 and ESXi 6.0 as hypervisor splitted into 2 Clusters (10 Nodes per Cluster) which are running in two different vCenter (vCenter Server Appliance 6.0.0.20100 Build Number 4632154) and two different locations.Now we are testing Nutanix Async DR to test failover from one side to the other side. All VMs will be shutdown successfully and will be migrated (unregistered at the local vCenter Server and registered at the second vCenter Server) successfully to the second vCenter.The Issue is, that VMware Connection Server, which is connected to both vCenter Server, will not recognize that the VM have moved from one vCenter to the other. So it is not possible for us to connect to this VDI on the second side.Can anyone assist us find a solution for this problem?Best RegardsMarkus

Use iSCSI for a VDI environment

Hi, We are thinking of building a separate VmWare Horizon view cluster and make the Nutanix-cluster used just for server loads. We have a few scenarios of creating this. And one is to buy 4 new vmware hosts and connect them to the existing nutanix cluster with iSCSI, this is just because we have enough storage already in the existing cluster. My question is, will it be a bottleneck to use iSCSI? We will run about 260 Win7/Win10 task-workers VDI clients. Regards Tobias

OS Gold Image Best Practices | NTFS Allocation Unit Size

I've been doing some research on best practices when creating a gold OS image for VDI. Some vendors (e.g., EMC) recommend using 8k vs the default 4k with Windows 7. Obviously this has a lot to do with vendor based storage and overall design. Is there a specific OS NTFS allocation unit size Nutanix recommends when staging a gold image based on Nutanix storage technology? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
