Prism Central or Prism Element: Where Should You Apply Your Licenses?

If you're applying licenses from our Portfolio 2.0—including NCI, NCM, and NUS—you'll need to do so directly from Prism Central (PC). PC is now the central hub for managing your licenses. Explore all the products that are part of our Portfolio 2.0 in this page: Nutanix Cloud Platform Software Options In the past, our legacy portfolio allowed licensing through Prism Element (PE). However, we now recommend using Prism Central for your licenses. G6 Hardware EOL (Licensing) Best Practice When Removing From Your Cluster

Hey all you fantastic Nutanix enthusiasts out there!! 🤓 Wanted to bring up a dynamic we are seeing recently with the G6 hardware family going away soon, getting decommissioned and replaced in the field. In the case where your applied G6 licenses have expired, your cluster will of course get some notifications but also the “Expand Cluster” button will be greyed out. 🤔 This would obviously be an issue for someone working on adding their new G9 nodes to the cluster to then proceed with any data migrations or configurations needed to decommission the G6s. The best practice here is to fully remove all licenses from the cluster in question and then complete any and all node changes, upgrades and updates. Any restrictions imposed by the expired licenses will have ceased so this should proceed as expected. 😊 Once the cluster is in it’s final state, this is a perfect time to run through the licensing workflow and apply the appropriate licensing again. Why 'Unnamed' Cluster Appears in Your Licensed Clusters List and what It Represents

If you’ve come across an "Unnamed” Cluster in your list of licensed clusters, here’s what it means: It’s simply referring to a Prism Central cluster. If the administrator didn’t assign a specific name during the Prism Central setup, it may appear as "Unnamed” by default. Here’s an example of how it might look: The image displays a table with a "Cluster Name" column, highlighting the entry labeled "Unnamed." This isn’t an error, just the default label that appears when no name is provided during configuration. If you’d like to change the name of your Prism Central, refer to this article: Manually Changing Prism Central Cluster Name using nCLI (nutanix.com) or open a technical support case. Licensing is preventing to run the Cluster Destroy command

As part of the cluster destroy or decommissioning process, we are supposed to unlicense the cluster first to release the licenses back to the Account Inventory. If you forgot to do it, now there is a guardrail which will not let you to destroy the cluster. You will get an error like below: ERROR cluster:1360 We have detected that you are destroying a cluster that is in a licensed state. Please refer to https://portal.nutanix.com/kb/3716 to reclaim the licenses from this cluster before proceeding with 'cluster destroy'. Sometime the cluster can be in a unstable or undefined state where the customer will not be able to access the Prism Gui to reclaim the licenses. In that case the solution provided by KB 3716 may not work. The workaround for that can be: SSH into the cluster Start the cluster Once the cluster comes back up, run the " ncli license reset-license " command It will show whether the license was reset successfully After that, stop the cluster again and try the "cluster destroy

Looking to enable Intelligent Operations in your Prism Central? (Nutanix Cloud Manager) NCM Starter, NCM Pro and NCM Ultimate license tiers enable you to access Intelligent Operations. NCM Starter tier is ideal for infrastructure operations such as monitoring, planning, rightsizing and low code automation. NCM Pro and NCM Ultimate tiers provide comprehensive infrastructure operations features. If you do not currently have NCM licensing and would like to try out these features, Nutanix provides a free trial period of 90 days to try out Intelligent Operations. Got RBAC? (Role Based Access Control)

Got RBAC? This is for single account and multi account Role Based Access Control in the support portal. When this feature is enabled it puts the power back into your hands, the customer. Please talk to your Account Team to discuss the benefits of RBAC, if you have multiple accounts to link asset and license inventory availability. It allows you to designate Customer Admin(s) who can then perform a number of actions. This includes User Management, which consists of: Adding and removing users and Admins Locking and unlocking users Updating account access, and Assigning roles in regards to licensing plus tagging. NCC License Violation alert for VM flash mode or vDisk_pinning

The below NCC alert gets raised when VM flash mode (vDsik Pinning) is enabled nut Ultimate Tier license is not applied on the cluster: Running : health_checks system_checks check_license_compliance[==================================================] 100%/health_checks/system_checks/check_license_compliance [ WARN ]-------------------------------------------------------------------------------+Detailed information for check_license_compliance: Node XX.XXX.XXX.XX: WARN: Features not permitted by license(s) applied are being used. Non compliant features:vDisk pinning| Cluster Configuration:vDisk_pinning enabledRefer to KB 2469 (http://portal.nutanix.com/kb/2469) for details on check_license_compliance or Recheck with: ncc health_checks system_checks check_license_compliance To resolve the issue, you can apply Ultimate tier license to the cluster. If you do not want to purchase/upgrade to the Ultimate Tier, then you can uncheck the Enable Flash Mode option from the virtual machine settings

Prism Element's "About Nutanix" window shows an "Unlicensed" status when it has been correctly licensed.

A cluster is licensed through Prism Central but after licensing, the following discrepancy is observed. The Prism Element interface displays an ''Unlicensed'' status for the cluster under the ''About Nutanix'' popup, as shown in the screenshot below, even though the cluster is licensed correctly: If the popup in Prism Element is not in sync with the current licensed state this cosmetic discrepancy may be observed. The cluster will continue to work based on the licenses that have been applied and which are shown in the Prism Element licensing page. This was resolved in AOS version 6.5.3.6 and later versions.

License expiry date does not match with the Hardware Support

Hardware Support/Support Contract and the License validity are 2 different entities. • Hardware Support/Support Contract covers the support from the Nutanix end with regards to the portal issues and hardware. This is term based. If this is expired users would not be able to login to the Nutanix Support portal or get any technical support on the Hardware/Software upgrade. This is not same as the License Expiry Date. • License validity refers to the Prism/Cluster license which is managed in the Prism Web Console. This helps in accessing prism features but not the Support portal. • License and Support Contract are renewed individually, and they are not interlinked. For the renewal, user must reach out to the Nutanix Account Manager(AM), or drop an email to renewals@nutanix.com team by looping in the AM.

Enabling Ultimate Tier Trial

Not seeing the Ultimate 90-day trial on Prism Central? No problem! When registering our cluster from Prism Element with Prism Central you will have the opportunity to try our highest tier of licenses and features for 90 days. If this is the first time you are registering the cluster with Prism Central and don’t see the option we can enable the features by following these simple steps. If you have Seamless licensing enabled in your Prism Central then… Please log on to PCVM, Load the Licensing page under the Admin Center Click on Applied Licenses Select Prism, and click on More Actions Select Show Features on the top right corner of the features page, you will find a button to enable Prism Ultimate Trial. License Feature violation NCC check/alert

License Feature Violation is triggered when a feature running on the cluster doesn’t have the proper tier of License. From the CVM you can get the details of the allowed license features and check which one is showing as false: nutanix@cvm:~$ ncli license get-allowances Feature : dr_compression Feature Display Name : Remote Site Compression Allowance Type : BOOLEAN Allowance : true Feature : self_encrypting_drives_password_enabled Feature Display Name : Self Encrypting Drives Password Allowance Type : BOOLEAN Allowance : false <<<--------- If you do not want to use the feature any more, you can disable the feature and run NCC check to resolve the alert. if you wish to continue using the feature please check the Software Tier table and apply/purchase the proper licenses.
