Cluster Maintenance or Relocation

Occasionally you need to temporarily power off your cluster hardware for maintenance, relocation or any other necessary task. To do this you will need to stop your cluster and then start it back after the required task was done. But you will need to perform the following tasks before and after the cluster stop/start commands: 1- Disable any “Protection Domains” in the cluster and make sure there is no ongoing replication occurring. 2- Make sure no “Fail” message appears when performing the ncc health check on the cluster 3- Power off all the Vms running in the cluster 4- Stop “Files” (previously AFS) if you are using it in the cluster 5- Run "cluster stop" command 6- power off all CVM 7- Put all hypervisors in maintenance mode 8- Power off the hardware After the maintenance and powering on the hardware, you will need to undo the above steps. Put nodes out of maintenance mode and make sure all Cvm are powered on, to run the command “cluster start”; you could then go ahead with st

Hello I'm new to Nutanix and setting up a small 3 node cluster with ESXi. Just wanted to know whether there is any automatic migration from Nutanix side in case of resource contention on 1 node. One such example: if there are too many VM hosted on a single node and causing storage contention, is there any option on Nutanix to automatically migrate some VM to other nodes (similar to what VMware DRS does - but this time, for storage) Thanks

Nutanix Files Shares

I'm curious to find out how folks have been implementing departmental shared folders in nutanix files. We are currently running SMB files from a NetApp filer which has the ability to setup Qtrees/quotas for subfolders of the top level share. Is this possible in nutanix files as I'm not seeing anything in the documentation around it.

Setting EVC on a vSphere cluster

if you are trying to set “Enhanced vMotion capabilities” (EVC) on a running cluster, you may see a pop up Error Window saying: “… Powered-on or suspended Virtual machines on the host may be using cpu feature hidden by that mode” You can create a new cluster in vSphere and set the EVC on it first with no hypervisor, and then move the nodes and Vms from the old cluster to the new cluster. Please follow the link “Unable to Set Enhanced vMotion Capability (EVC) on a Newly-created Cluster” for detailed instructions.

Assistance using Powershell to retrieve last snapshot time stamp

This is my first script using the Nutanix provided Powershell cmdlets. Everything has been pretty straight forward so far. But i'm having one problem, i think someone will probably know off hand. I'm building a report. In this report it should have next snapshot time for protection domain (Easy enough). But also last snapshot created time (haven't found it yet). Anyone will ing to assist? I'll show the two object types i'm building already in the script. Trying to produce Projects and Roles report

So I can use prism central to go into each project and get the access control list, which is group and role. I am unable to decipher the API to produce a comprehensive list of Projects with the associated Group with Role. Does anyone know the link between these sets of data? I can get individual lists. The Access_Control_Policy does not have the correct information. I have a particular role that does not show up in a dump of the acp list or details. I've looked by uuid and name. Thanks, Bill

Hi, I want to set a VM to a categorie, using the REST API. However I Get the message INVALID_REQUEST code:"Cannot clear previously set time zone Don't know what to do with this. Please note that I had to add the "power_state", because if I don't I get an INVALID_REQUEST code: "VM power state must be specified for Update operation." Which I dont understand, as API documentation said power_state is optional. How to Run Execuatble Script from Desktop

Hi. I am fairly new to scripting especially with Nutanix. I can do Powershell scripting just fine but making the conversion to shell scripts has my brain in a knot. I have some acli commands to create a new vm, create a new Disk and a new NIC but I was unsure how to run them as an executable from my Windows desktop. Our cluster is Nutanix AHV. So I run this from a command line to open putty and connect. It works fine without the script. putty.exe -ssh admin@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -pw ****** -m "C:\newVM.sh" The script is: acli; #creates a clone of Server2016 #vm.clone aTest clone_from_vm="Server2016RefImage" memory=8G num_cores_per_vcpu=2 num_vcpus=2; #creates a D drive # vm.disk_create aTest bus=scsi create_size=200G index=1 container="Container-1"; #Add a NIC #vm.nic_create aTest connected=true network="Vlan6"; Each line will run fine if I run it in putty but I am not sure if I am stringing the commands together correctly. How to list Prism Central servers that belongs only to certain project. For example list only those Vm's that belongs to project "default". "Powerstate" expression name is "powerstate" but what is corresponding name of "project" which I should use to call "project" name? NCC reboot check failed

After having the CVMs down for some cluster maintenance \ VLAN ID changes, everything is back up but after running an NCC check the first check, CVM reboot check, failed. Is this something to be concerned about? What is actually being checked with this?

How to get VM to Storage Container relation using REST APIs?

Dear Friends, I am trying to find out VMs to Storage Container relations using Nutanix REST APIs but not able to get. I have tried both V2.0 and V3 APIs. In 'vms/list' v3 API, we do get "disk_list" for each VM but I do not see these vDisks in 'vdisk' or virtual_disks APIs (v2). Also there is no reference to Storage_Containers in 'vms/list' output so it is difficult for me to find the correlation. Please help.

Get AHV VM NIC - Server Error 500

Using PowerShell and AOS 5.11 and same version cmdlets... I have an AHV VM in the object $VM that I retrieved from Prism Central. Attempting to upload AOS binary/json always results in "Server Error"

Hi all, We are attempting to update our AOS offline (all of our clusters do not have internet access) and we have tried uploading via IE, FF and Chrome to no avail. IE "uploads forever" and Chrome and Firefox say "Server Error" everytime. We are way past due for an AOS update (5.1.0.3) and we are trying to get this done! I have a few other side questions as well -- Is the AOS upgrade process non-disruptive? I saw the KB about updating the AOS and it says the CVMs will reboot, but other than that it should be seamless, correct? We need to update our hypervisor (ESXi 5.5 Patch 10) and need some input there as well if possible here, since we are on a Nutanix node config and posting here seems like the right place. If not, please let me know! We are running a NX-1065-G4 ESXi 5.5 Patch 10 vCenter 6.0 AOS 5.1.0.3 NCC 3.1.3 Foundation 3.7.2 BIOS 2141203 BMC 01.92 LCM 1.0.e1416e5 HBA MPTFW-10.00.07.00-IT Any input on the order of operations

Get Only AHV VMs

Using PowerShell and AOS 5.11 connecting to Prism Central of mixed hypervisor environment (VMware and AHV), is there a quick way to return just the AHV VM's? I see there are some search string, filter criteria, etc.. options for Get-NTNXVM Right now, there are 1600 VMs and the ones I am looking for are AHV. I can retrieve the whole list from Prism Central but I wondered if I could have it only send a filtered list. $VMList = Get-NTNXVM | Where { $_.acropolisVm -eq "True" } but that reads all 1600 VMs from Prism Central... Thanks!
