The Nutanix Calm™ application orchestrator offers a powerful way to enable self-service and manage applications across hybrid clouds. While we continue to add more features to Calm, this blog post highlights and explains a new feature which allows application owners to take Snapshots of and Restore the services in an application running on Nutanix® Cloud Platform.Snapshot and Restore are two basic operations that are used by datacenter admins and IT admins during routine maintenance of applications. Previously, IT admins had to rely on scripting Snapshots and restoring tasks inside the blueprint or by using native Snapshot/Restore capabilities provided by the underlying cloud platforms.Calm 3.3.0 introduces Snapshot and Restore tasks for multi-VM blueprints. Keeping customer feedback in mind, our aim is to make the lives of Calm users simpler by providing configurable Snapshot and Restore tasks along with the already powerful orchestration capabilities of Nutanix Calm.Having Snapshot a
As businesses digitally transform to meet new challenges and provide better customer experiences, their data is still growing exponentially. This means the places data is created and processed must also grow to match and handle this growth. With all of that data being created across so many different deployment locations, the problem of data blindness threatens data security and business continuity. To protect against these threats, businesses who live on data must attain greater visibility for all of their data so that they can protect it, store it properly, and monetize it to fuel growth.Data blindness is the inability to see what data your organization has created, how it's being stored, who is using it, and how they are using it. Nutanix created Nutanix Files™ with built-in data intelligence via rich metadata to solve the problem of data blindness. This includes metadata created that can tell administrators what type of data is being stored, the age of the data, and how it is bein

A Brief Introduction to Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI)Today, HCI is mainstream and offers customers a cloud experience in their own datacenter, bringing efficiencies and agility for demanding IT requirements. AMD has been working closely with ecosystem partners, including Nutanix, in delivering fully tested and validated x86 solutions that offer outstanding performance, scalability, security and business value.Nutanix Acropolis™ software converges compute and storage to provide cloud-like infrastructure designed to run applications at any scale. Nutanix HCI software tightly integrates storage, networking, and compute resources into a powerful software-defined virtualized single-managed pool. The integration of storage, networking, and compute resources into a single infrastructure building block helps avoid manually stitching together separate discrete computing devices. It can also breakdown operational silos associated with a traditional 3-tiered architecture, eliminating the ne
Nutanix X-Play is a simple low-code/no-code automation tool built into the Nutanix Prism management controller that helps you automate routine operations and tasks, and provides the ability to auto-remediate issues that may occur.Using the X-Play tool, you can define a set of actions or a series of actions (called a “playbook”) based on a trigger, such as an event, alert, or an incoming webhook. The actions you can configure allow you to perform actions on your infrastructure, such as adding resources or running scripts. You can also integrate with APIs and 3rd party tools. With the release of Prism Central 2021.7 comes four new out of the box X-Play actions to make life as an IT admin a little bit easier.New Actions in pc.2021.7The 4 new actions are:Add to Category - add a VM, host, or cluster to one or more categoriesThe ability to add a VM, host, or cluster to a category automatically has been an anticipated feature and is a great addition to the action gallery. Digitalization is probably one of the most effective means for successfully mastering enormous social, ecological, and economic challenges. And since early 2020, the global pandemic has shown us what is absolutely essential both today and tomorrow when dealing with major problems; You need to be ready for the unexpected – meaning you must be able to adjust to new situations quickly and flexibly.Even though digitalization is a global phenomenon, customers must decide for themselves how they want to move forward. Over time the hybrid cloud has become the preferred cloud operating model because it is usually the best choice for the business world in terms of optimized costs. This fact encourages enterprises to pursue and develop innovatively. However, as digitalization continues to progress, IT infrastructures are becoming more diverse, and migrations to multicloud environments can now be called the new normal. Companies usually opt for a combination of on-premises and cloud (hybrid envir
What is Nutanix Flow?Nutanix Flow network microsegmentation is a feature in Nutanix’s AHV hypervisor that allows you to control and inspect traffic types across your virtual infrastructure. This is achieved through security policies which can be applied to individual virtual machines or categories of virtual machines. Flow is a function of Nutanix Prism Central and AHV and is enabled with a single-click. As a security best practice, you will want to understand microsegmentation and have a firewall that inspects traffic before you switch this feature on. To use Flow you will need to go to your Prism Central Settings and check to “Enable Microsegmentation” and then click OK.What is Microsegmentation? Traditional segmentation works on “north-south” traffic – that is, client-server interactions that cross the security perimeter or a New Generation Firewall (NGFW). Today’s hybrid cloud architectures have changed the way we approach security and network traffic flow. The perimeter now is ig
Over the past several years, vendors have introduced an impressive new generation of architectures optimized for existing and evolving workloads like machine learning, deep learning, IoT and other data-reliant workloads. While the diversity of technology has grown dramatically, hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is becoming the architecture of choice for IT—moving from business applications into mission-critical applications. HCI provides the agility to support a wide range of business solutions from edge to core to cloud.Today, new business insights and innovation are increasingly dependent on analyzing data ‘at the edge’ and efficiently storing these insights in the cloud. In response to this, Lenovo and Nutanix have worked together to develop a versatile solution that is able to support any workload, at any scale, anywhere. The product of this collaboration is the newest ThinkAgile HX series for Nutanix. To properly illustrate the value of this HCI edge solution, we will discuss: Ho

Gone are the days when CIOs and IT leaders were happy if their IT infrastructure just worked as advertised. In today’s hybrid IT world, the workloads have become operationally distributed across on-prem, managed services, multiple public clouds, and edge sites. Hybrid IT inherently brings in additional complexity to deploy and manage. Disaster recovery planning becomes quintessential for the smooth operations of hybrid IT when faced with natural or man-made disasters. In the disaster recovery (DR) space, supporting options for different Recovery Point Objective (RPO: maximum amount of data a customer is willing to lose), Recovery Time Objective (RTO: acceptable time to restore operations when IT failure occurs) aligning to business needs is critical. And providing flexible options for protection workflows, DR failover runbooks, multi-site deployments, IP alignment post-recovery, etc., have all become table-stakes.Today’s CIOs and IT leaders expect their DR environments to be smarter and

Nutanix Prism HCI management software helps organizations intelligently manage infrastructure and applications with reduced effort. There are many features (part of the Pro and Ultimate tiers) in Prism that provide in-depth details and simplify operations, with intelligent operations (AIOps). For this post we will focus specifically on X-Play (Cross Play), the Nutanix low code automation for ITOps.The X-Play feature within Prism allows administrators to automate routine operational tasks, reducing the effort and time spent on tasks while increasing the quality of results. To provide this automation, X-Play lets you select actions and triggers from a provided catalog to construct a playbook. The playbook then executes the operations based on the logic that was constructed and can intelligently repeat the actions if required until the desired outcome is achieved. The following are a number of great examples of what is possible when automating common operation tasks using X-Play. These ran
With the introduction of Elasticsearch® 7.13, the Elasticsearch®’s feature of searchable snapshots is fully GA. If you are running Elasticsearch® with Nutanix Objects, you now have the option of having cold nodes that have a single copy of a shard backed up by snapshots stored in an S3 bucket or frozen indexes where no data is stored on the actual data nodes, and they only access the snapshots when needed. This can greatly decrease the number of data nodes required as a single frozen node can handle 100TB of data. This is great news for organizations that keep data around long term, but still have occasional searches against this data. I also had an inquiry recently where a customer had to ingest 3TB a day but there were rarely any searches, and the data had to be kept for a year. This is another great use case as you can lifecycle the indexes from hot to frozen rather quickly and use very few data nodes. The new searchable snapshots feature gives you even more reasons to run Elasticsea

While Nutanix has grown and matured, so has its customer base. With much broader adoption comes a wide variety of legacy applications from complex infrastructures that benefit by migrating to the Nutanix AHV hypervisor. Sureline Systems tackles the challenges of migration from these complex environments. What Makes Migration from Complex Environments Challenging?Complexity comes from a variety of factors that need to be handled correctly to avoid any negative impact on the migrated applications or cause needless delays. A migration solution needs to migrate servers that are running on physical servers, hypervisors including VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, OpenStack, and other major cloud infrastructures. It must also support migration of both Microsoft Windows and Linux servers. But complexity is not just in the platform, it is also in the nuances of the version of the operating system that the application is running on, and how the data is stored on persistent disk on drives, volumes, and file

The Nutanix Move tool (formerly known as Xtract) is a cross-hypervisor mobility solution initially introduced to help customers migrate VMs onto the Nutanix platform with minimal downtime. Since the underlying infrastructures differ, a small amount of downtime is incurred during cutover from the source platform to the target.Since its introduction, Nutanix has enhanced the Move™ tool to support a variety of lift and shift migrations, including migrations to and from AWS® EC2 instances. The latest release of Nutanix Move 3.7, launched in January 2021, makes AWS migrations much simpler, with a smoother UI workflow, improved security, more reliable migration process, and increased performance. Nutanix Move BackgroundStarting with the Move 1.0 release, we had a framework that provided the foundation for workload migrations among Nutanix AHV and other hypervisors and cloud platforms. In 2018, the Move Engineering team added support for Amazon EC2 migrations. Nutanix Move leverages published

We also extend File Analytics to include native ransomware intelligence, custom reporting capabilities, and da
The Internet of Things (IoT) landscape is a jungle. The sheer number of IoT platforms, portals, and solutions makes it extremely difficult to choose the right solution to a given problem. When working with IoT, you get used to a lot of trial and error, running tests, and doing proof of concept (POC) installations. Having a stable and flexible platform for running those installations and tests becomes crucial.I have worked in the IoT space for several years with customers of varying organization sizes, ranging from large private enterprises, to public-sector, to small startups. Throughout my experience, I spent a disproportionate amount of time designing and setting up infrastructure for running my tests or POCs.In this blog, I demonstrate how the Nutanix® Karbon™ Platform Services (KPS) platform-as-a-service offering simplifies deploying infrastructure, running quick POCs, and providing stable production environments for IoT use cases. KPS accelerates innovation by freeing you to focu
