The technical piece below found our way through our partner channels. Installation instructions for Red Hat OpenShift on Nutanix are detailed in the documentation below. Enjoy, and as always feel free to provide us with feedback. User Provisioned Installation of Red Hat OpenShift 4.3 on Nutanix AHV 5.15 This manual was created during a proof of concept environment using Nutanix AHV 5.15, the KVM-based hypervisor of Nutanix, with OpenShift 4.3 in combination with the Nutanix CSI driver. The Nutanix CSI driver provides scalable, persistent storage for stateful applications using Nutanix Files and Nutanix Volumes. Please note: At the time of writing, Nutanix AHV in combination with OpenShift is supported by Nutanix, but not certified by Red Hat. If certification is required, clients are advised to use any of the other hypervisors supported by Nutanix. The installation steps followed are documented in the IBM Cloud Architecture & Solution Engineering repository guide. The PoC envi
I was wondering what best practice is for defragmenting guest OS on a Nutanix node. I am running ESXi on the nodes. I have looked all over but I cannot find anything that tells me definitively the best practice.
I’m new to Nutanix and we are using Prism Pro to move a VM from one 6.7 Vmware farm to another and back again. That works 100% but Veeam V11 can not see the VM once it is moved. It’s like the UUID is wrong but I have checked that and it is ok (same) Support are looking into this and are saying this is a unique case… surely this must be common? If there is no solution we will end up with the same VM added to the Veeam backup job, again and again… I have tried using TAGS and direct add to veeam…
I have VMware 6.5 U2 running on Dell XC 740 xd appliance in NUTANIX environment.ESX are not patched since a year now. Looking for the best option to apply patches. Is VUM will be ok or from PRISM ?
Hello Everyone,Has anyone here run Sybase ASE in a Linux VM in AHV? We have a few legacy physical servers that I’m looking to migrate into our AHV cluster. I know it ‘should’ work but looking for a reference or reassurance from anyone who has ‘been there, done that’. Thanks,Jim
Hi All, I'm wondering what configurations people have on Async Protection Domains? How many VMs per PD Create many PDs and group by application/department/roles eg
All Web servers in one group, all SQL servers, all application servers All HR based systems, All IT based systems, All Fiance based systems Is there a limit on how many PDs you can have in a cluster What's the dis/advantage to having fewer large PDs over many smaller PDs What frequency and retention are the local/remote snapshots What issues arrise when activating a PD I believe the IP address will be removed and the MAC will change...correct??, any scripts or automation applied?
Thanks for any response you can give. Regards Dave
Use a Nutanix cluster external Data Services IP address when using IntelliSnap. Install a VSA on every Nutanix compute node. Install the MediaAgent software on all the VSA proxies. Install CommServe and MediaAgent on a secondary Nutanix cluster to separate backup and production infrastructure to protect against failure. Follow Commvault sizing guidelines. Create a virtual server client proxy group for easier management. When using IntelliSnap, colocate the MediaAgent software with the VSA. With ESXi, when you add ESX hosts to vCenter, make sure that the format of the ESX host name matches the host name format in vCenter. For example: If the host name format is short name, use short name to add the host to vCenter. If the host name format is FQDN, use FQDN to add the host to vCenter. If the host name is an IP address, use the same IP address to add the host to vCenter. With ESXi, use NBD as the transport mode whenever possible. With ESXi, configure the management network interfaces t
I want to introduce Self-Service VM operations via Prism Central for our end-users (do not have CALM). So, I’ve used cloud-init (Linux VMs) and cloudbase-init (Windows VMs) along with customization code (Python) to deliver this Self-Service VM provisioning experience. You may refer https://github.com/cybergavin/nutanix/tree/master/self-service for details of this set up. Any feedback always welcome. Sorry if the code isn’t too pythonic as I’m a python newbie.
I’m new to Nutanix and we have a Nutanix cluster online. For testing purposes I’m running diskspd test in a VM.I’m running some diskspd test with identical VM configs in several enviroments 3-tier Hyper-V/ VMware and HCI Nutanix AHV.Why is it that running a test with -Sh flag (no software/hardware cache) gives almost 10 times lower results in Nutanix compared to other platforms? Without -Sh flag Nutanix is running test with higher results compared to my other testing platforms. Is it because of how CVM is designed to work? I’m just trying to understand.
Third party backup integration is data protection that involves creating snapshot and backup copies via third party backup software. The requirements for integration changed depending on the backup software being used. Some of the supported backup vendors are HYCU Veeam Commvault Cohesity Rubrik For full list please visit Alliances Partners within Backup & Disaster Recovery. This is a high level overview of the process. It consists of following components Backup Server Configuration database (usually deployed within the backup server or within the appliance (depends on the vendor)) Proxy (deployed within the NTNX cluster) Repository NTNX Cluster Following Services are involved in creating 3rd party snapshot Apache Web Service - handles all API calls to and from the backup software Prism - tracks all API v1 and API v2 calls Aplos and Aplos Engine - tracks API v3 calls aplos_engine is responsible for the aplos snapshot (Snap UUID - kind UUID) creation Ergon -
We are new to Nutanix. We are migrating from ESXi to AHV. We currently have some level of CPU oversubscription in place on ESXi. We anticipate the need to oversubscribe CPU on some clusters and I am looking for ways to do this safely. I’ve looked in the Best practices guide but there was very little there. Any help would be appreciated.
I want to try FRAME with azure to see what it give “hope” azure native login is supported.I created the enterprise application , the secret etc.. the only step that i change is that i set the owner permission on the RG quite better than the subscription but i receive an ADAL error during authentication ; this is maybe because ADAL is depreciated .. could you warn the support about it ?
Hi,We have PRISM Central Pro license and I’d like a report or Analysis view on which virtual machines are consuming the most memory. The Cluster in question is VMware 6.7. Is this possible and what is the best way to go about it?
Good afternoon, all!I’m setting up a new PKI infrastructure in a Nutanix cluster and I want to shut down the root CA for safekeeping. Is there a way to add some safeguards so that the VM can’t be started inadvertently?
I know there’s another topic like this but, it is 3 years old. Is there an easy way to put a single ESX host into maintenance mode? Not to compare products but with Cisco Hyperflex, you right-click on the host and there’s a “Hyperflex maintenance mode” option. This does what needs to be done to the CV without having to SSH into anything.I was just wondering if the process has improved in 3 years.
Hi,I cannot expand the cluster when Pre expand-cluster tests were failed and error message was "Failure in pre expand-clustrer tests.Errors:Failed to get vlan tag of node:XXXXX" on Prism Element.CVM and HyperVisor Network use Tagged VLAN and PortChannel in L2 switch ports.Ping to HyperVisor’sManagement IP from other NW segment is OK.Of course, CVM and HyperVisor’sManagement IP are same segment.Should I do any other? As below, each of versions.・DELL XC640・AOS:5.10.6・ESXi:6.7 Update 2 (Build 13006603)
Hi, We have deployed couple of guest VMs on Windows 2019 Standard Edition OS on our 6 node cluster. Both the guests are configured with 1 VCPU with 2 cores along with 16 & 32 memory respectively. We have procured standard paper license of the OS. The hypervisors are running on AHV version 20170830.337 & AOS - 5.10.8.1 LTS. Is there any specific licensing model for Windows Server OS to run on AHV? How are the Windows licenses determined? Kindly help.
Hi, I’m new on the Data protection feature. I’ve done the a test VM migration to another nutanix cluster. The thing is after the migration, the VM on the source will be destroyed. I’m planning to use the Data protection to migrate the VM from the source cluster to the target cluster. I would need to failback the VM to the source VM. Am I able to restore the VM on the source site?
Hi All,Does anyone know that veeam can directly add prism central(AHV) for backup?
We are currently evaluating Nutanix and also HYCU for backup. So far HYCU looks really good running on my CE lab server but there is one issue that they cannot answer to. For file restores on older recovery points (past the "Fast Restore" point), HYCU must copy the entire VM from the storage target and mount it to even start the search for a file. While for small VM's this my not be a big deal, larger VM's would cause a wait time based on your network connection to the storage target. For anyone using HYCU is this a concern to you? I'm very interested in hearing real world feed back here. Thanks!
Hi Everyone,I want to know what nutanix version can do replication or leap recovery plan with volume group (iscsi)? I currently use the CE version for testing ,my Nutanix CE and PC version are NUTANIX 20190916.276.I'm testing the iSCSI space of volume group mounted on Windows Server, then execute the plan of leap failure. However, after my windows server fails to DR, there is no iSCSI space on the windows server, and I do not see that the volume group is sync to DR.Is there a problem with my configuration, or is the CE version not supported at present?Has anyone ever done this test? Thanks.
Hi! have a Project in Prism Central that's acting wierd. When i try to update the Project trough GUI i get this error message:Edit conflict: please retry change.Notification { "api_version": "3.1", "code": 409, "kind": "project_internal", "message_list": [ { "message": "Edit conflict: please retry change.", "reason": "CONCURRENT_REQUESTS_NOT_ALLOWED" } ], "state": "ERROR" }So i connect with SSH to a PC CVM, and try to delete the project trough nuclei,<nuclei> project.delete Project \Name confirm=trueConfirm deletion of project? (yes/no) yes{ "message":{ "kind": "project","code": 409,"message_list":[ { "message": "Edit conflict: please retry change.", "reason": "CONCURRENT_REQUESTS_NOT_ALLOWED" } ],"state": "ERROR", "api_version": "3.1" } }It is only the specific project that has this problem, other projects works just fine. I have searched KBs but cant find anything. The ncc health_checks run_all are not showing up anything suspicious. I have also opened a case on this error!
Nutanix offers a variety of DR solutions. The flowchart provides a detailed representation of disaster recovery solutions. Leap with two Prism Centrals: Asynchronous replication: it enables you to protect your data with an RPO of 1 hour or beyond. The policy creates a recovery point of the VMs in every 1 hour (or in the hourly time interval that you specify in the RPO) and replicates it to the recovery site NearSync replication: It enables you to protect your data with an RPO of as low as 1 minute. The policy creates a recovery point of the VMs in minutes (1–15 minutes) and replicates it to the recovery site. You can configure disaster recovery with NearSync replication between two AHV or ESXi clusters at the same or different on-prem sites Synchronous replication: It enables you to protect your data with a zero recovery point objective (0 RPO).You can configure a protection policy with Synchronous replication by defining the VMs or VM categories that replicate all the writes on the pro
Why a Grizzly bear? Why not? Awhile ago I created a video showing how you could easily save lots of money by saving dollars on the EC2 costs by using hibernate. Nutanix Clusters is the only on-prem vendor offering this for customers that want to lift and shift to the public cloud or use the public cloud for DR. I want to share the code snippet and how to create an API user in the Clusters portal. You can first get familiar with hibernate here: To create an API user to make the call:Go to the Clusters portal Under Organization go to usersGo to the user optionCreate an API userAdd an API user You can limit the scope of the user to a single cluster. Once you have a API user you can use the below script to make an API call or add a script to a VM.#!/usr/local/bin/pythonimport hashlibimport hmacimport timeimport requestsimport base64# Client credentials#client_id from the user from the clusters portalclient_id = "*********.img.cloud-internal.nutanix.com" #client_secret password from the
Hi , Could you advice me ?Now, Hypervisor and CVM is NOT syncronized from NTP Server.I use CloudConnect everyday , but that was failed. Is CloudConnect faiure reason relevent to NTP Server unsyncronization? TestConnect is OK from Onpresmiss Cluster to AWS.I read this;https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/details?targetId=Web-Console-Guide-Prism-v5_17:wc-cloud-connect-wc-c.htmlSincerely,
