Veeam Backup for Nutanix File server SMB Share backup - From Snapshot path?

Currently we are backing up the Nutanix file share backups using Veeam backup (NAS SMB file share)

Current settings:

Backup Directly from FIle share

This option is skipping some of the locked files whcih is expected…

Would like to change it to Backup from storage snapshot at the following path:?

I would like to know what would be the snapshot path for Nutanix file SMB shares? what I need to give here?

Can someone suggest so that I can avoid skipped files issue on the backup jobs

Hello @sivahariharan24

That’s relate to Veeam. However:

  • To back up files from the native storage snapshot, select Backup from a native storage snapshot at the following path and specify the path in the \\server\snapshotfolder\snapshotname format to the snapshot stored on the SMB file share.

If you select this option, you can additionally use custom scripts written by you, for example, to create a snapshot before the backup and remove it after the backup. You can define these scripts when creating a new file share backup job, as described in Script Settings.

NOTE

Mind that Veeam Backup & Replication does not take snapshots itself, but it can use a snapshot taken by the storage system.

File share backup jobs do not trigger the storage snapshot creation and deletion automatically. You can specify the folder where the storage snapshot is stored. In this case file share backup jobs can access this folder and read data from the storage snapshot.

Select Failover to direct backup if snapshot is unavailable if you want Veeam Backup & Replication to read data for backup directly from the file share when the snapshot is unavailable. If you do not select the option and the snapshot is unavailable, the file share backup job will stop with a failure.

Regarding Nutanix Files snapshot folder please check this KB: https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/kbs/details?targetId=kA00e000000Cs4lCAC

Between Files 3.2.x and 3.5.x, the value for "allow browse snapshots" within the smb.conf changed from 'No' to 'Yes' - this now makes the .snapshot folder visible (instead of hidden).

The folder where snapshots reside called ".snapshot"
