Question on Nutanix foundation | Nutanix Community

Hi,

I am still new to nutanix and i have a few question on the foundation

I have 2 Dell XC740xd 12 servers and install with server 2019 Datacenter core as hypervisor.

Both Server has a SVM in it.

  1. is SVM the same CVM?
  2. Isn’t CVM the Prism Central? If not Prism Central means i had to download, import and setup the VM for Prism central into the nodes?
  3. does each SVM has to be from different domain? Can i join both server SVM to the Same domain even though they can’t be setup as cluster in nutanix?
  4. Can i use failover cluster to join both nodes as cluster and reflect it on Nutanix Prism Element or Central?
  5. On Foundation number 2 Nodes the Nodes A, B, C, D, am i able to join it as cluster if i setup both node as A node?

I tried to understand your questions by I dont get it.

Have you manually installed server 2019 on the nodes? Or did you installed them via Nutanix Foundation?

And you cant create a cluster with 2 nodes. You need at least 3. (Or 1 ;)) (Or 2, 1 node clusters with witness).

Hi Jeroen,

I have installed the nodes via nutanix foundation vm, hypervisor selection.

what is the 2,1 cluster with witness? any material on this i can read?

BTW the link for  iso_whitelist.json seem to end up in error, is it still there?

The two nodes cluster is a bit different then the traditional cluster (3 nodes or more). More info about that topic here: https://next.nutanix.com/how-it-works-22/two-node-clusters-33840

So with that information in your head lets try to answer the other questions:

  1. is SVM the same CVM? - Yes, some people call it SVM but the official name is CVM.
  2. Isn’t CVM the Prism Central? If not Prism Central means i had to download, import and setup the VM for Prism central into the nodes? - No, PC is a separate installation on virtual machine(s) on the cluster. PE (Prism Element) is available in each CVM.
  3. does each SVM has to be from different domain? Can i join both server SVM to the Same domain even though they can’t be setup as cluster in nutanix? - You cant join a domain with the CVM. CVM is a hardend virtual machine which you cant play/change.
  4. Can i use failover cluster to join both nodes as cluster and reflect it on Nutanix Prism Element or Central? - No, as a two node cluster is not a real cluster.
  5. On Foundation number 2 Nodes the Nodes A, B, C, D, am i able to join it as cluster if i setup both node as A node?  - You an extend a 3 node cluster later on. If you have a 2 node "cluster” you need to create a real cluster if more nodes need to be added.

Then I have a question for you, why using Hyper-V? Keep it simple and use AHV. ;)
