Unable to Install - Incompatible IMPI | Nutanix Community

Hi,

We’re trying to run a POC initially on hardware that has a ASMB IPMI, this appears not supported for foundation deployment. We’re a bit confused about what we do as the documentation for ipmi-less installations isn’t really clear - any help would be greatly appreciated as its stopping us from doing any initial POC testing.

We’ve tried multiple routes to install AHV/AOS but all seem to be falling flat at the moment.

  • Foundation VM is unable to deploy to the IMPI targets, gives the Incompatible error. Does not auto discover targets, IPMI is a ASMB9-iKVM
  • Attempts to manually create ISO on VBOX VM not successful, ISO is created by VM but unable to boot stating a kernel error. Tried multiple attempts at ISO and burning in different ways but no luck at all.

The foundation process is only for the commercial version of the product and will only work on nutanix certified hardware.

To play/test with nutanix you can install community edition on the servers.

We had advise from Nutanix Pre-sales that we should be able to use the POC on the servers we have been doing testing on for CE, we only had to switch over because CE was presenting issues (listed here: https://next.nutanix.com/discussion-forum-14/live-migration-not-functional-internal-error-attempt-to-migrate-guest-to-the-same-host-43306?postid=70092#post70092)

So to confirm, if IPMI is not present or compatible its not possible to install?

What brand and model servers are you using?

These particular servers aren't branded which the prep-sales tech is aware of and suggested we test POC vs CE due to the issues we had, Hardware is all server class including LSI Raid card. As stated the question is around IMPI-less installation rather than the hardware as the hardware runs AHV no issues.

Oke so unbranded server. The will not work with the commercial version installation (foundation process). They can only run CE. And RAID is not what you want for nutanix so, if I was you, I would go back to that sales person ;)

Thanks! Yeah we had further discussions and they assumed it had a compatible IPMI as they run a similar one to SuperMicro, its detected but just won’t proceed with install but makes sense now, annoying but we resolved CE issues to continue testing while we await certified hardware to arrive :)
