Error Installing Foundation "CRITICAL svm_rescue:1046 No suitable SVM boot disk found" | Nutanix Community
Skip to main content

Hello

I’m testing an install on a DL360 Gen10+ server. The server has an NS-204i boot controller with 2 x  disks and there is an MR216 controller with 2 x 3.84TB disks (believe they are PM893a).

I have tried the install a few times but have been wiping the server each time it fails. I’ve now got to the stage where it fails with the same error each time so I need to know why its failing.

"CRITICAL svm_rescue:1046 No suitable SVM boot disk found"

Should I have three arrays in the server? One for AHV, one for SVM/CVM and one for storage?

How/where do I run lsscsi" to check for partitions that may need to be removed?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Thanks

Russell

Are you trying to install CE on it?

Nutanix is not using hardware raid. (well only for AHV boot). So remove the raid controller for you data disks.

Do you have a screenshot of the CE installer wizard?

Hello

Apologies, its not CE, I should have added I’m using the following installers and the Foundation VM.

Nutanix Installer package 6.10

AHV ISO 20230302.102001

I can post the deployment log if that helps.

Thanks

Russell

Is that specific hpe server a Nutanix certified node? I dont think the dl360 is on the HCL. You can only install the commercial version of nutanix on nutanix certified hardware.

Hi Jeroen

Here’s the DL360 Gen 10 plus HCL

https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/details?targetId=HPE-DL-Gen10-Plus-Hardware-Firmware-Compatibility:mod-dl360-g10-plus.html

Do you need three “pools” of disk for the Foundation install? If I were doing a CE build, I need a disk for hypervisor, a disk for CVM and then a disk for storage.

My DL360 build has the boot controller and then storage disks. Does the Foundation installer install the hypervisor and the CVM on the boot drive?

Thanks for your help with this.

Is that server bought as a Nutanix node or was is of the shelf or something else?

For the nutanix nodes you dont need to configure anything, all should be correct straight from the factory. Foundation will take care of everything.

So I assume you just have a HPE DL360 which is not marked as official nutanix node. I dont have the experience with hpe. But with dell hardware there is a specific firmware loaded. So I assume this is the same for HPe.

Hi Jeroen

It was bought and specified as a Nutanix node but doesn't have any install on it. Thus I’m doing the bare metal install.

It would be good, from your experience with other vendors, you could describe how many disks you would need as a minimum for a node, this will help me work out if I have the correct number of disks.

Thanks again

Russell

Well minimum is 2 SSD (this is for the CVM and data). With internal 2 NVME to boot AHV. But

If the node is official a nutanix certified node from hpe then foundation will do all the magics for you. Like installing AHV on the raid 1 disks and cvm on the first two ssd. And if this is an official node then there will be a correct set of disks in it.

Hi Jeroen

Interesting, so you mentioned not having RAID on the disks. I will try wiping the RAID for the data disks and retry the build and will let you know.

Thanks

Russell

Hi Russel,

I think you dont have an official nutanix certified node. Yes, it is a HPe DL360. But I think it is not bought from HP as a Nutanix certified one. So you can only install Nutanix CE on it.

An official node comes correctly configured from the factory.  (RAID for Boot, rest of the disks without RAID. Correct amount of disks, correct bios/uefi  setup etc).

I humbly disagree on this.  I did speak to Nutanix directly on the spec and you are right, there is no build on the node if you buy it as a DL series server. you also cannot use LCM (which wont be used anyway for this project).

Also, may I refer you to the certified versions for the Foundation, AOS and AHV to be installed on DL servers:

Oke, lets ask Kim if he has more expertise from the HPe node: @Kcmount

Hi Jeroen

No need, the build has successfully completed!

I cleared the RAID config on the node and its completed the build.

Thanks for your help with this.

Ahh cool. 👍🏻

The DL360 G10 Plus is qualified as a third-party platform (vs it’s DX cousin which is considered OEM.

I would make sure all of the arrays are destroyed on the  and you should have the M.2 on the NS-204i configured as a mirrored pair.  Note, the M.2 boot drives must be either 480 or 960GB, any other sizes are not supported.
