Actifio backup for AHV or AOS

Commvault with Nutanix - Best Practices Checklist

Use a Nutanix cluster external Data Services IP address when using IntelliSnap. Install a VSA on every Nutanix compute node. Install the MediaAgent software on all the VSA proxies. Install CommServe and MediaAgent on a secondary Nutanix cluster to separate backup and production infrastructure to protect against failure. Follow Commvault sizing guidelines. Create a virtual server client proxy group for easier management. When using IntelliSnap, colocate the MediaAgent software with the VSA. With ESXi, when you add ESX hosts to vCenter, make sure that the format of the ESX host name matches the host name format in vCenter. For example: If the host name format is short name, use short name to add the host to vCenter. If the host name format is FQDN, use FQDN to add the host to vCenter. If the host name is an IP address, use the same IP address to add the host to vCenter. With ESXi, use NBD as the transport mode whenever possible. Hi All, I'm wondering what configurations people have on Async Protection Domains? [list] [*]How many VMs per PD [*]Create many PDs and group by application/department/roles eg[list] [*]All Web servers in one group, all SQL servers, all application servers [*]All HR based systems, All IT based systems, All Fiance based systems[/list] [*]Is there a limit on how many PDs you can have in a cluster [*]What's the dis/advantage to having fewer large PDs over many smaller PDs [*]What frequency and retention are the local/remote snapshots [*]What issues arrise when activating a PD [*]I believe the IP address will be removed and the MAC will change...correct??, any scripts or automation applied?[/list] Thanks for any response you can give. Config file.XML backup fails

Hi All, i'm using Networker to backup VMs over Nutanix/Hyper-V, the VM itself is being backed up but the config files.XML is failing for some reason related to access permissions. Any idea how to change permissions on datastore or config files? Thanks, Pierre

Backup options for Nutanix AHV VMs to VMware ESXi?

Looking to protect VMs running in production on Nutanix AHV to a DR site running Non-Nutanix VMware ESXi hardware. Currently VEEAM seems to only support “Instant Recovery” to vmware. Which seems to mean the VM is running from the backup file. I suppose at this point you could vmotion to permanent storage. Unfortunately there’s no way to know how slow this will be even if the backup repository was on the same san. Curious if there is any other backup software that makes this process a little more direct, or if anyone had expereince with this type of recovery. Thanks in advance.Currently looking at: CommVault; HYCU, scripting exporting and importing disk files, praying nothing ever breaks, crying.

Any tips for initial replication?

We've got a 11mb pipe between sites that bursts to about 20. We have some PD's that we've set up with about 30 machines in them and turned on replication. Its not surprising that initial replication is going very slow and we have an estimated completion time measured in months. Both sites are in production. I can't take on cluster down and bring it locally to the other site to get the intial replication done at high speed. Is there a white paper or procedure or even someone in here who's got some tricks to help us get replication moving? I was thinking of Starting a new PD, setting up replication, then adding one or two machines at a time until it's full and replicated. That seems pretty tedious and very time consuming. Any help would be appreciated.

trying to connect the maxCapacity and totalImplicitReservedCapacity fields with data from Prism gui. As of yet, unable to connect the dots. I'm assuming the amounts being presented from the cmdlet is in bytes. 3 Node Cluster with NX-1155 as Remote Site for Desaster Recovery

Hi, Im currently looking into a 3-node Cluster layout with NX-1155 hosts and PRO license as Remote Site for DR. I would like to go for 3 nodes instead of a single node configuration because it can withstand block/node failures. But Im trying to keep it low on the price scale. The one thing that keeps bothering me is that I want to be able to start a few user vms on the Remote Site. I know its possible but 64GB of RAM per host isnt much especially when the CVM blocks at least 24. It has to compete against a 3node CE installation which im not in favour because i would like to have support/production grade software. But I could get hosts that supports more RAM and start more VMs if I need to. What do you think?

CommVault - Backing up ESX VM's to tape...

Hello All, We recently deployed ESXi Nutanix Clusters in 2 locations, site "A", and site "B". We have setup a Nutanix Protection Domain, and are replicating VM's from site "B" to "A". We have a requirement to backup several replicated VM's from site "B", to tape, with CommVault for long term retention, [u]at[/u] site "A". While I have been able to accomplish this by "manually" browsing the datastore, and sifting through the .snapshot folder, and adding the VM(s) to inventory, I was wondering if this process could be automated or even simplified? Does anyone know if the numbered folders inside the .snapshot folder change regularly? If they do not, then I could possibly automate with a script. Multiple Remote site entries to same remote cluster for DR and backup ?

Hi, I couldn't find this in the documentation. As I understand, the choice of Async DR vs Backup is to be made at remote site configuration. I would like to replicate some VMs for DR, and some for backup only. Is it possible to create two remote sites in a cluster pointing to the same remote site, thou allowing to have one remote site set as " Async DR" and the second one as "Backup" ?

Backup to Backblaze B2

Is there any chance of being able to use built in backup to work with Backblaze B2? Is there any feature request to have this done? It is much cheaper than Amazon or Azure.

PD snapshot time-to-complete

As a pre-step to a planned failover, I want to take a snapshot of each of my Metro PD's (4 total). Together, they are over 5 TB in used storage. Since they're all in the same Storage Pool I plan on doing one at a time so as to not compound the i/o load - does this make sense? Also, can anyone provide a *rough* estimate of how long a PD snapshot should take to complete? Thanks!

Async DR vs Backup

Good morning... evening... night all over the world ^^ I'm wondering what are the technical differences between Async DR and Backup. What I've red in documentation is that Backup does not allow running the virtual machines on the remote site. This comes with many questions as I couldn't find any detailed description of the backup mechanism. As far as I understand, both works exactly the same. Only difference is that on the remote site, the backup target PD cannot be promoted to allow running of the VMs. Is this correct ? is this the only difference ? Otherwise, what are all the differences between both modes ? Any impact on the size of used on the target space ? ...

Hello, In NOS Version 4.1.3 SyncRep for Hyper-V is release, which enables to have stretch cluster on Hyper-V as mentioned in release notes, Is there any configuration guide or document highlighting similar to Metro Availibility Best Practise document but for Hyper-V. Appreciate.. vF.P

UNITRENDS

Is anyone utilizing Unitrends as a backup solution? I was looking at their appliance offering with cloud offloading since they do not charge for recovery. I also have a 3 node Nutanix block running VMWare 6, but still have a few physical servers that will remain physical for a little while longer. Thanks for any feedback.

Replicating Existing VM Snapshots

We are using the ASync Data Protection between two sites to replicate our VMs. But that is only taking a new snapshot of an existing VM and replicating that snapshot. I would like to have replication setup for some of VMs so that the VM and all of the snapshots we've made of it outside of Data Protection are replicated as well. We may need a very specific state of a VM at our remote site. Using only the Async DP snapshots won't fully meet our needs. Is there any way to do this with the existing Nutanix software? I'd rather not purchase something third party to solve this problem.

RECLAIMABLE SPACE row shows "Processing"

Hello, I connected a CE Edition to our nutanix to test async data protection. A snaphot from the remote side always show "processing" in Async Dir -> Local Snapshots -> Row "RECLAIMABLE SPACE" also if the snapshot was done days before so "processing" is suspicous. Is this a known issue, limitation of ce, bug, or config problem. /Greetings René

Restore recovery point in place in PC

Hi, I’m tryning to wrap my head arout the differences between Snapshot and recovery point on a functional perspective. My target is to take vmware like snapshot of my vm. For that i saw 2 possibilities :the recovery point, which are managed by PC and allow for easy replication The snapshot which, correct me of i’m wrong) can only be created in PC My issue is that the recvery point cannot be restored “in place”, I mean in the vm object itself, but only by creating a clone of the vm, this create a extra administrative burden if i have to restore a vm from a recent recovery point as i have to :restore/clone the recovery point into a new VM delete the old one update the clone with the previous name, categories, etc ….In addition the newly restored/cloned vm has lost all the previous recovery point However the snapshot can be restored in place, but they are not managed by PC and replicated to the backup cluster … TL;DR ; Is there a way to either create a snapshot via PC or restore in place

Self Service Restore portal hangs

When I load the SSR portal through the desktop shortcut, or by browsing to locahost:5000 within a second or two the browser chokes and becomes unresponsive. I thought it may be related to the background animation, does anyone experience this also? Is there a way to disable the animation in the SSR portal page? Mant thanks, Daniel

"Old generation AWS instance is configured for remote site AWS"

Hello, I am receiving the following alert: "Old generation AWS instance is configured for remote site AWS. Follow KB 3861 to change the instance type to m3.2xlarge and cloud CVM configuration for better RPO/RTO." The remote site was configured only about a week ago and it spun up an instance size of m2.2xlarge. I cannot find any reference to the KB article 3861, or anything about changing the instance size. Does anyone have any ideas? Many thanks, Daniel
