Veeam backup and data protection

I am backing up with veeam in nutanix cluster. I use esxi 6.5 on nutanix cluster  I also replicate to remote office with some virtual machines with data protection. and backup of the same virtual servers with veeam. Is there a limit here or this building is made right. both are using the same snapshot. Would it be a problem if replication starts with veeam backup at the same time

Pre-Freeze/Post-Thaw Scripts for Veeam for AHV

We’re in the process of testing Veeam for AHV on our NTNX running AOS 5.10.  So far with Windows issues we have had very few issues and we worked them out quickly.   However with a Linux VM running Ubuntu we’re getting errors on the Nutanix where the snapshot is checking for pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts.  We’ve attempted a variety of ways to get those scripts in place, but it seems that there is no clear path.   Does anyone else have experience with Veeam for AHV and backing up Linux VMs? Does anyone have any info on setting up the pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts?  While we have some experience with this on Linux we’re certainly not experts.

Snapshot exclusive usage vs Reclaimable space

Hi team, I have created a Protection Domain with one VM. I have setup a daily schedule with a retention policy of 5. When I look at the local snapshots, I shows me the last 5 snapshots that are available. This is the same when I tick the box "Include Expired". When I add up the reclaimable space for these 5 snapshots, the total comes to 143.72 MiB. When I look at the value of "Snapshot Exclusive Usage" for the PD, it tells me 492.48 MiB. Why the difference? On a related question: what is the impact on performance when deleting snapshots? I understand it is a background process, but is there any impact on the protected VM(s) when this is initiated or while it runs? The environment is running AOS 5.0.1. Thank you. Marc.

RPO for DR Replication in HyperV

We are evaluating a Nutanix solution vs a normal 2012R2 HyperV with VNX SAN cluster. As we are a Microsoft shop, we are going with HyperV to reduce licenses. We have an HO and a DR site for Disaster Recovery. Our normal HyperV design involves having a HyperV cluster in each site with HyperV REPLICA to replicate data to the DR site. We have calculated this to give us an RPO of 30 seconds (HyperV Replica can even go to 5sec RPO) and an RTO of 15mins. Does Nutanix have any replication methodology that can give us a similar RPO? It looks like the RTO can be reached, but the RPO is at least 5mins and can't go below. Note that we have to use a HyperV engine and not VMWare. If this cannot be done with Nutanix replication, will Nutanix support a HyperV REPLICA between the 2 sites?

I created a replication rule in nutanix. I did not understand a topic. keep the last snapshots for remote office in Schedule area. Leave it blank and choose 1 or 3. For which scenario should I use this place? this option creates my return point. Another question is this; I have a thin disk 100 gb virtual server. It takes up space in the snapshot replication rule. How much snapshot space does it have a calculation for? thanks

Acronis integration with Acropolis, how must I proceed?

Hello, First-timer here, I don't know if I'm posting on the right place, I'm sorry if I'm not... I have Acronis 12.5 Backup installed on a Windows Server 2019 Essentials 64 bits (that's installed bare-metal on a Lenovo SystemX 3650 M5). Attached to it, there's an IBM TS4300. I'm trying to figure how to backup the VMs running on my AOS 5.10.1 in the tape drivers inside the TS4300. I know I can install Acronis Agents on my Windows VMs, but I don't know if that's the answer for my question. And, if a disaster happens and I need to restore the Acropolis VMs from the tapes, how can I do it? Sorry if my questions seem too basic, but I'm googling for the desired infos all day long with no success up to now, so I'm asking for help here. Best regards,

About DR design, How to calculate WAN bandwidth ?

Hi All I'm a Nutanix partner in Thailand, when I present Nutanix product in DR feature one question alway arise from the customers who seriously interest in this feature. "How to caculate WAN bandwidth ?", that mean to how effective compression and deduplication of DR feature. I can not find this information on the Google and Nutanix site. Please advise me. TIA.

Two Common Questions on Protection Domain names

Q1:  Is it ok to create protection domains on two different clusters with the same name with remote sites enabled on both clusters but PD is only setup with local snapshots only?   Answer: It is possible to have a protection domain with the same name as the remote site protection domain as long as they are not configured to sync with each other and it is only a local protection domain. It is also possible to configure "active" schedules for that protection domain and retain the snapshots in the local cluster.   Q2: Can a Protection Domain be renamed once configured and has entities and snapshots associated with it?   Answer: There is a workaround available which is to create a new Protection Domain with this procedure:   Create a new Protection Domain with the desired name and schedule. Remove all protected VMs from the old Protection Domain. Make a note of existing consistency groups. Add the VMs to the newly created Protection Domain, reconfigure consistency groups as they were in th

Hi, Vmware thin disk backup takes full disk backup. VM backup size is entire disk allocated space. The backup is taken from IBM Spectrum Protect. Is this a known issue. Hypervisor: Vmware HW: Nutanix Any idea/suggestion ?

Veeam Backups - VMs are getting STUNNED on snapshot removal

Hi All We are just bringing a new Nutanix Block online and starting to move some production VMs.With our Veeam backup testing we are seeing noticeable stun (in some cases up to a minute of VM unavailable) issues with snapshot removals that are done as part of Veeam backups. We have a veeam proxy installed on the nutanix NFS datastore, and are running vsphere6, latest Nutanix OS, etc. and latest version of Veeam 9.5.I did find a article on Nutanix forums about forcing NDB/network mode to help with this and this did improve thing but not enough to call it resolved. I cannot have my primary SQL server stunned every time we do a backup, so this is a bit of show stopper at this point.Just looking for ideas at this point?Jeff

Wait! Don’t delete that snapshot! 

It’s five-o’clock on Friday and the database admin has just let you know they’re working on a problem and need to keep last week’s Friday afternoon snapshot until further notice. If you do nothing that backup will expire in about an hour due to the protection domain schedule. How can we make sure this snapshot sticks around?    Don’t worry! There‘s an NCLI command for this. You can change that snapshot’s expiration time to indefinite, and it will wait around until you delete it manually later. See the solution in the KB article here: https://portal.nutanix.com/kb/8594   First, you need the snapshot ID and the protection domain name. You can get this from the Prism UI, or from NCLI.   To capture these details from Prism go to the Data Protection dashboard, Table view, Async DR tab, and select the protection domain from the table here. Remote site replication tuning

What options are available within nutanix to speed up replication to a remote site? The best i am able to get on a single stream is about 20MBps (160mbps) with an aggregate speed of about 60MBps (480mbps) spread out over several streams. However, we have a 10gbps link between sites, so i expected to get better throughput.

Backup from AHV

Hi everyone, considering AHV hypervisor, which are the possible options to backup the virtual machines? As far as I know, the only certified backup software is commvault... but I was wondering if AHV/prism can do vm-level backup and which are the features (guest/application consistency, possibility to file level restore ecc....) and differences compared to Commvault. Thank you

Recovery Plan Network Mappings

HI Everyone!   Can you map a test network in a recovery plan to both the production network and the Test network at the recovery site?  Nothing in the documentation around this.  Our customer has VLAN 2 at the recovery location (isolated) and this is the network that matches current VLAN 1 in production.  Since it’s isolated, they also want to use it for testing. Dears We are facing VM backup with HyperV and Veritas BAckuexec, The backupExec guys are saying Nutanix HyperV is not supported because it uses SMB share ? Is that true ? what is the other options to take HyperV Vm Backups

Backup Acropolis File Services (AFS)

Hello, we switch from NetApp to Nutanix and I want to know how could an AFS Backup look like. I have read that ABS is underneath AFS to deliver the data, hence no File Services Data resides inside the AFS VMs doing the client side. So a VM-only backup would not reach any data that we migrate from our Filers to AFS, right? We have Veeam B&R Enterprise Plus but doing File-level backups gains around 200KB/s. The VM-Backup on the other hand gets over 100MB/s so there is someone pulling on all brakes with file-level backup. Are there any other options to get the data in a timely manner? What to do about aged third party snapshots alert?

If you’re managing backups with Veeam, Hycu, Commvault, Rubrik, or another third party application then you may have encountered the alert message “Aged third-party backup snapshots present” even though nothing seems to be wrong. If so, you probably want to know why you’re seeing this alert and what to do about it. This alert doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem. It’s just seeing snapshot age. In most cases you just need to change the alert threshold which defaults to 7 days. See this article for more details about the alert. The phrase “third party snapshot” used in this alert refers to a specific type of snapshot requested by third party backup software using an API option specifically for this purpose. The backup application essentially has ownership of this snapshot. If your backup policy is set up to keep only five snapshots for this job, or to remove any snapshots over 14 days old, the decision of when to delete is made within the third party backup software. VSS Failure on VEEAM

Hello everyone, I am wondering if anyone had any insights on how to get a succesful backup with veeam and nutanix and if there is something I am just overlooking. I know I am oversimplifying but I have followed the best practices setup and have checked all of the settings twice but somehow I still get the following error: 12/5/2015 1:30:11 PM :: Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: Provider [{89300202-3cec-4981-9171-19f59559e0f2}] does not support shadow copies of volume [\LSSHARE01LIFE_NTNX01].--tr:Failed to add volumes to the snapshot set.--tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks. I could have sworn that if NOS is added to AD then the share can use the VSS. I am frankly not finding any information on this and have gone from logs, to accounts, to verifying the storage. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
