We have already shared a preparation sequence for an upgrade. Step 5 in the process is to upgrade Foundation.

The upgrade process for the Foundation is straightforward and does not require any downtime:

  1. Run NCC as described in Run NCC Checks.

  2. Log on to the Prism Web Console, click the gear icon in the main menu, select Upgrade Software in the Settings page, and then click the Foundation tab.

  3. If an update is available, click Upgrade Available and then click Download.

  4. When the download is complete, click Upgrade > Upgrade Now, then click Yes to confirm.
To run the pre-upgrade installation checks only on the Controller VM where you are logged on, click Upgrade > Pre-upgrade. These checks also run as part of the upgrade procedure.
The Upgrade Software dialog box shows the progress of your selection, including pre-installation checks.

To upgrade the Foundation of the cluster at a dark site please follow the steps provided in the Prism Web Console Guide v5.10: Upgrading Foundation

Hi Alona,

Thank you for the detailed information. I’ve a question that I would like to clarify. regarding downtime for Foundation update if I don’t have DRS.

Background:

In my environment, I am running ESXi (ROBO license) without DRS and have multiple NX1365. Typically for disk firmware upgrades, I will do it via LCM  manually one host at a time after I evacuate the VMs from the targeted node to another node using vMotion in vCenter.

For Foundation upgrade, I can see that this is also detected in LCM.

Question: Taking into consideration that I do not have DRS, can I upgrade Foundation via LCM without any downtime ?

Also roughly how long does this takes?

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Foundation upgrade does not require downtime with or without DRS as the task takes place on the background. The upgrade itself should only take a few minutes per node. The rest of the time would be the download and a pre-check if you wish to leverage the option.

Let me know if that answers your question.
