We have Red Hat Virtualization from where we are going to migrate to Nutanix AHV. Virtual machines in RHV are LVM, not disks, because we are using fibre channel. How can we migrate virtual machines from RHV to AHV?

We are using RHV with Fibre Channel so virtual machines are not files. They are LVM’s. We have to convert those to files first but don’t know how… :rolling_eyes:

Apparently, it’d doable albeit laborious Is it possible to convert LVM filesystem back to normal?

How many VMs are we talking about? Man do we need P2V for move :)

We are using Acronis Cyber backup to move most of the virtual machines but I think around 10 virtual machines would be easier and faster to move straight from RHV to AHV.

Okay! Are they big?

Some are only about 50GB but there is also two virtual machines that are over 1TB.

Okay! This is the use-case why we need P2V on Move! Then this would be no issue. In those special cases we have a small Nutanix VMware cluster, then we first P2V them to that cluster with VMware converter, and then ProtectionDomain migrate them to AHV!

BTW you can use backup like Veeam. Backup with agent on OS level and restore backups on another platform - create VM and perform network restore from agent backup. Or backup with agent, restore it to VMware and move from ESXi to AHV.

Hi @Pauli Lehtonen , this is Jeremy from Nutanix product management.  I think in the short term, the suggestions to take a backup/restore with an in OS level agent make sense.  Longer term, we are looking to add P2V support to Move.

We have migrated about 30 virtual server from RHV to AHV already with Acronis Cyber backup. It’s faster and easier than we thought. :relaxed:

No I haven’t tried in that way. 🙂 I am quite sure that Acronis would help in that process like it did in RHV to AHV migration. I think it would be possible to migrate directly without the help of Acronis also. In our environment the RHV was so unfamiliarly configured and we have so little knowledge of RHV itself that Acronis was the easiest way to migrate VM’s.
