Nutanix Updates query

Hi,

 

 

I have 2 cluster and are planning to update the hypervisor and VM.

1 cluster with 4 Dell nodes with Hyper V server 2019 Hypervisor and multiple VM with Window server and ubuntu

another cluster with 4 Dell nodes VMware Hypervisor and multiple of Window server ubuntu VM too.

 

I have downloaded the LCM bundle package for Dell and the LCM packages and publish it onto the Dark web IIS server. However I can only see the Hardware build and the manifest.

  1. Where do I download the software build? 
  1. Does the Software build package include the AOS and the Hypervisor? 
    1. Where does the Hypervisor package include? Hypervisor version ? If it is hypervisor version, does it means update the vulnerability or upgrade the version?
    2. Does the package include the monthly Microsoft vulnerability patches for window or SQL?
  2. What is the procedure or steps to do the entire updates? I do know the that hardware is the last
    1. Update Guest OS, node OS or update AOS first?
    2. Is there any available checklist that I need to do before update the VM, node and AOS?

Please give me advise.

Hi Derrick,

As Nutanix supports heterogenous hardware and hypervisor, the process defers based on the setup/infrastructure. I would recommend to Internet connected which simplifies the LCM experience in general. If that is not possible then either you can use web server or use direct upload method of LCM.

Please refer to the Life Cycle Manager Dark Site Guide which will give all the required guidelines using LCM.

As for your questions the replies are as following.

  1. Where do I download the software build? - All downloads are available on Support portal categorized under Downloads 
  1. Does the Software build package include the AOS and the Hypervisor? 
    1. Where does the Hypervisor package include? Hypervisor version ? If it is hypervisor version, does it means update the vulnerability or upgrade the version? - In case of third-party like VMware vSphere, MS Hyper-V you will have to download from respective support portal, like VMware support portal, For Microsoft the updates are part of Windows Updates. Nutanix do not redistribute third-party hypervisor/updates/patches.
    2. Does the package include the monthly Microsoft vulnerability patches for window or SQL? - Microsoft vulnerability patches for window are part of Windows updates, regarding SQL its irrelevant to Nutanix as it does not manages the OS or Applications installed as Guest VMs.
  2. What is the procedure or steps to do the entire updates? I do know the that hardware is the last
    1. Update Guest OS, node OS or update AOS first? - Guest OS is not managed by Nutanix Platform, Node OS if referring as hypervisor then yes, based on hypervisor like AHV and ESXI can be updated using LCM, for Hyper-v as its part of Windows updates take a look at Cluster Aware Updates here or refer to Hyper-V Administration for Acropolis
    2. Is there any available checklist that I need to do before update the VM, node and AOS? - Exclude VM, as Nutanix do not manage Guest VMs, Refer to LCM guide above link or Acropolis Upgrade Guide
