Inquiry on Temporary License Application to Temporary Cluster

Dear Nutanix Community,

We would like to inquire about a general licensing scenario regarding temporary license usage.

Currently, we have purchased a new license NCI Starter with a total of 60 cores. Before applying it to the target production cluster, we are considering applying this license temporarily to a separate cluster for initial setup or validation purposes.

The scenario we would like to confirm is as follows:

1. Apply the new license to a temporary cluster with approximately 60 cores.
2. After validation, remove the license from the temporary cluster.
3. Re-apply the same license to the intended production cluster.

We would like to understand:

* Whether this scenario is supported.
* If there are any risks or limitations associated with this process.
* Any recommended best practices for handling such a temporary license application.

This inquiry is intended as a general question regarding licensing flexibility and does not involve specific device details.

as long as you are using it in a place and removing it and assigning it to another cluster (which is the only way actually), it should be fine.

but what do you mean by validation which you like to do it on a temporarily cluster first?

Hi Jamali, thanks for replying.

By validation, I mean initial cluster configuration and testing VMs migration (moving some workloads to verify functionality).

In our case, this is part of a transition scenario: we plan to temporarily apply the license to an existing cluster (while waiting for the new cluster to arrive), and then re-assign the same license to the new production cluster once it is ready.

The license will not be used simultaneously across clusters.

there will be no issue, just make sure to reclaim the license once you like to transfer the license to another cluster.

Just to confirm, do you happen to have any official Nutanix documentation or KB article that references this kind of license reassignment scenario?

Alternatively, have you personally experienced a similar case in your environment?

Would be great to have some reference or real-world confirmation.
