Do I need to licence the storage available in a S3 bucket configured as a tiering location in Nutanix Files? | Nutanix Community

Dear community,

This is my 1st post/question here.

We are storing raw data on one of our Nutanix Files. For the moment, 100 TiB are licensed on for it but these data are increasing quickly. These are mainly raw data that we need to store for at least 5 years. We also need to be able to access these files without any delay if needed in production.

Therefore, we are looking for a way to free up space on Nutanix Files using tiering to be able to store these “cold” data in an S3 bucket with a tiering policy (after 1 year without access/modification, the data will be tiered on S3). This S3 bucket is for example 300Tib big.

My question here is: we licenced 100Tib of this Nutanix Files with a NUS Pro licence. Do we also need to licence the 300Tib of storage used as a tiering location?

Thanks for your help

Lionel

I assume you mean an s3 bucket in aws and not Nutanix Objects.

You dont need to license the extra 300TiB but the data tiered to the s3 bucket is still managed by Nutanix Files and so that data is under the files License.

Example:

100TiB files license.
100TiB in use with data.
30TiB is tiered to an s3 bucket in aws.

Then Nutanix Files still needs an 100GB license.

Great question LionelS.

Let me ask around for some specifics internally and I’ll update you here.   🤓

Thank you for your answers.

@JeroenTielen  Indeed, it is an S3 bucket from AWS.

So, as I understand, nothing changes with S3 tiering for the licence. If I licence 100Tib on prem, uses after the tiering policy and a few month 70Tib on prem and 50Tib on my tiering location, I will have to licence at least 20Tib more for a total of 120Tib for Nutanix Files. right?

Thanks you

Lionel

Hey team!   🤓

Confirmed with with engineering, you guys are on point here.

Tiered capacity still needs to be licensed.   Since tiering is saving the physical space, Files content is tracked logically for ease of access, potential updates and future tiering.
