We are starting to migrate from ESXi to AHV, using the MOVE application. And as the title says, all the VMs are stuck on 1280x1024 resolution when they come up on AHV. I’ve tried the “Preferred Resolution” change mentioned here

Display resolution in Windows Server 2016 (AHV-VM) stuck to 1280x1024 | Nutanix Community

I change the Preferred resolution from “<Unset>” to “1920x1080”, but as soon as I exit and boot into Windows, it goes back to 1280x1024 and won’t change. Some posts mention not having Guest Tools installed before the MOVE, but that made no difference for us. I’m stuck at the same resolution, regardless of whether Guest Tools was installed prior to MOVE or not. Nor does the method of access - launch console or RDP, the VM resolution is hard coded to this annoyingly small (by 21st century standards) resolution.

And all my VMs are UEFI, which is pretty much the default. And obviously that can’t be changed, without deleting the whole VM.

Is there any workaround or resolution (see what I did there? LOL) to this?

I figured it out, I wasn’t following the directions closely enough. After modifying the resolution, and saving, you MUST click Reset.

“Select Reset and click Submit in the Power off/Reset dialog box to restart the VM”

I was choosing “Continue”, which doesn’t change the resolution.

I’m all good now.
