So I’m currently in the middle of a Nutanix Deployment and are in the process of setting up our Nutanix Move 6.2 application for our new Nutanix environment. The goal is to start migration of VMs off our existing VMWare 8 environment. I noticed that Nutanix Move requires VMware’s VDDK (Virtual Disk Development Kit) in order to safely snapshot, clone and restore VMs for third party developers.
Originally I put a ticket in with Nutanix and as part of their KB about setting Nutanix Move up. It mentioned going to the latest VDDK available on Broadcom’s page and downloading it. Unfortunately that link no longer works:
So next step was to open a ticket with Broadcom’s support. Broadcom’s response was the VDDK (Virtual Disk Development Kit) has moved to VMWare’s TAP portal (Technology Alliance Program). You have to be enrolled with a support contract. Which I am and just updated my profile to enroll in the TAP program.
I later received an email as part of the onboarding process for TAP an as asking in the enrollment process how do you plan to use TAP to benefit your company and Broadcom.
Does your company plan to build sofware to sell? No
Does your company plan to build interoperable solutions for Broadcom? No.
Well if you answered no to these questions then your not fit for TAP. Case closed. No migration for you. (No soup for you..)
Almost sounds like their holding what was once free community development tool that previous customers could use for migration efforts hostage. I’m really curious to see what will happen with migrations in the future if that's the case.
I just want to get Nutanix move working!
