Can AHV Support RDM Disk Migration?

Hello,

What is the best practice to migrate a VM with 60 TB using RDM from esxi to AHV? Is it possible to map the RDM to Nutanix Cluster or to convert the RDM?

Hi,

RDMs in physically compatibility mode are converted by Move during source VM preparation.

Move performs the following:

  1. Shut down the source VM.
  2. Convert physical RDM disks to virtual compatibility mode.
  3. Start the VM.

If power cycle is not enabled, then Move converts the physical RDM disks to virtual with VM in powered on state.

So, technically it is possible to use Move with RDM.
You should be aware of long seeding times for a 60TB VM. I don’t know what the change rate is of your Fileserver, but snapshots can grow very fast and very big.

Personally, I should consider an application centric appoach for migration.

Regards,

Bart
