Which Phoenix version to use? | Nutanix Community
Skip to main content
I am a bit confused. On the Nutanix support portal, in the Downloads section for Phoenix, it say's, "Phoenix is a tool used to install the Nutanix Controller VM and provision a hypervisor on a new or replacement node in the field. You can download a Phoenix ISO file from this page. Each Phoenix ISO file is for a specific hypervisor and Acropolis base software (NOS) release."

But then when filtering, it shows Phoenix versions 2.1.1.1 to 3.0.4 are for Hypervisor "All". And then Phoenix version 2.0.4 has seperate downloads specificlly for KVM, HyperV, or ESXi, depending on which Hypervisor your are deploying.

Which Phoenix download are you supposed to use if wanting to deploy an ESXi 5.x or 6.x Hypervisor on the nodes in the field?
Yes, those versions cover all hypervisors. But you don't need Phoenix with Foundation 3.0. I would suggest you get in touch with your local Nutanix team to help get you up and running. There is also training available through the partner portal that covers most of these topics.
Thanks, but I do not have the luxury of getting in touch with nutanix as this install is for a customer tomorrow. Also, the confusion comes from going through the training on the partner portal. It seems now what i was wondring has been confirmed by you, That maybe the training is quite a bit dated. The video demos show screens of only Foundation & Phoenix 2.x. The training makes now mention of Foundation or Phoenix 3,x, or that you don't need Phoenix, as you indicate. Hence the reason for my questions. The training makes no mention of Phoenix for "all" Hypervisors. The training doesn't appear to know that Foundation or Phoenix 3.x even exists. Thank you.
Why don't you need Phoenix with Foundation 3.x? It seems like a critical part of the deployment?
Hello,

In addition to new releases in SW, HW, the Foundation process is also improved upon which is leading the way for the App Mobility Fabric and hypervisor choice.

Please see excertp from Field Installation Guide 3.0,

below. http://download.nutanix.com/documentation/Foundation_v3_0/Field_Installation_Guide-v3_0.pdf

Starting with release 2.1, Foundation no longer uses a Phoenix ISO file for imaging. Phoenix ISO files are now used only for single node imaging (see Appendix: Imaging a Node (Phoenix) on page 64) and are generated by the user from Foundation and Acropolis base software tar files. The Phoenix ISOs available on the support portal are only for those who are using an older version of Foundation (pre 2.1)

If possible, please advise on account, so we can try to help.
Hello, Thank you for your response. The Account is the REDACTED - JMK.

Will have no Internet access during implementation or access to my laptop. So I assume I will just need current version of Foundation VM, VirtualBox to deploy Foundation VM on, and Hypervisor that I am going to deploy. Would that be correct? They have had unit for a while. I assume Nutanix software will need to updated as well.
Yea, I responded to your other thread as well, you dont need Pheonix any more, as we merged to two concepts in Foundation 3.0 to make life easier.

also, feel free to contact the SE mapped to that account, the US Fed SE's are exceptional.

You'll need

1 - Foundation 3.0 OVF

2 - Latest Foundation 3.x patch

3 - Hypervisor ISO, which matching MD5SUM to field install guide

4 - NOS tarball for target version you'd like to deploy

5 - Virtualbox, Fusion, or Workstation. to each their own, I've used all of them
What do we do when we can't download the OVF :(

Anyone able to get me a link, I was told to wait for the people who sold me the hardware to give me the OVF but I really want to get going with this hardware and cannot wait around. I have no link to the OVF as a customer.

Any help would be apprecaited.
Hey there, understood. Have you sync'd up with your Nutanix account team yet?
