Setup Prism Central and Witness for Nutanix clusters | Nutanix Community

I understand that the Witness service is now integrated with Prism Central in version 2024.1. Given this, if we still want to set up one Prism Central in Site A or Site B (within a Nutanix environment) while placing the Witness VM in a third site (Site C, which only has a VMware environment), is this setup possible?

Thanks in advance!

Yes you can use this way, witness VM is available as a independent VM.

you can deploy Witness VM on 3rd Site.

Hi Qamar,

Thank you for your response. When we deploy a witness VM on a third site and Prism Central (PC) is hosted on Site A or B, if we want to set up Metro Availability between Site A and Site B, we should use the Protection Domain-based approach only instead of the Prism Central-based approach, which offers more advanced features like protection policies and recovery plans, correct?

Are you using ESXi as your hypervisor?

Prism Central based data-protection offered more features,  like reocvery plan and specially single  VM failover.  in case of protection domain you can failover full protect domain only.

most important mero availability requried less than 5ms letency between the 2 sites.

We have a Nutanix AHV cluster with 5 nodes on each Site A and Site B, and a VMware vSphere environment at Site C. Latency requirements, including the 5ms limit, are not an issue for us. Our goal is to use Prism Central-based Metro Availability. However, with the Prism Central 2024.1 version, which integrates the witness as a service, so then do we now need to place Prism Central on the third site, or can we still use a separate witness VM on the third site while keeping Prism Central on Site A or B?

You don’t have to replace 3rd site with Prism Central VM, its only a additioanl use of prism central if you have some witness requriements. In your case you can go with the Witness VM in 3rd site.

So you mean we can place a witness VM on the third site, configure and register it with each Prism Element at each site, then deploy Prism Central (PC) on one of the two sites, and still use Prism Central-based Metro Availability after that?

Many thanks for your support.
