We have a cluster that is not being used currently, and would like to run VMware/VSAN on it for testing some things. Is this doable? I am not worried it not supported as it is very temporary and Nutanix will be put back on it. I know ESXi is supported but you have to use CVM still to present the disk I think.

So has anyone tried using Nutanix hardware (NX-1175S-G9) to run ESXi and more importantly VSAN natively? I know there are lots of variables here, especially disks being recognized, etc.

If you install ESXi on it the CVM will be gone. But I think you can run VMware with VSAN on it. But I think you must just test it and this is not the right forum for that question ;) This would be a better place: https://community.broadcom.com/home

I think you should give it a try and see the outcome.
from what I see, it will not work as you have mentioned disk will not be presented to ESXI, it is datastores which getting presented from underlying AOS and for VSAN the characteristic of disk and controller is mandatory.
but again, I would love to know if you find a way to make it work :)

I've read you question again and now I do understand it more. If you reinstall the box with ESXi then all disks are presented to the hypervisor. It is up to vCenter/VSAN how to configure those disks for vSAN.

The disks in the node are just attaches to a disk controller (HBA) and when reinstalling the nodes, again, those disks are presented to ESXi.

So just do it. You can always run foundation again and reinstall everything back to the Nutanix stack ;)

@JeroenTielen I thought he wants to do VSAN on top of Nutanix too!
thanks for letting me read it again :)
as @JeroenTielen mentioned, do it and let us know with your result (most probably it will work (no Nutanix is in the picture!
