Physical Relocation of Nutanix clusters | Nutanix Community

So you have decided to relocate your Nutanix cluster to a different data center.

Here are a few things to consider and a brief overview of steps to follow for seamless transition.

Caution: This information is only provided to serve as a guide to plan your move.

Please engage Nutanix Support if you have any concerns or questions following this process.

Before you decide to move:

Consider the possibility of incorporating the existing IP address schema into the new infrastructure by reconfiguring the router and switches instead of Nutanix nodes and CVMs. If that is not possible, proceed with this guide.

Before you unplug everything:

Refer to these guides for the procedure.

Doc 1 (CVMs) CHANGING THE CONTROLLER VM IP ADDRESSES

Doc 2 (AHV hosts) CHANGING THE IP ADDRESS OF AN ACROPOLIS HOST

Doc 3 (IPMI) CHANGING AN IPMI IP ADDRESS

A few things to note:

1. Since the cluster is being relocated and the new network will not be able to communicate with the old network, you will need to run through some steps in the current location.

2. As an extension of the above point, certain steps will need to be completed AFTER the relocation is complete

Keeping this in mind, please do the following:

Before relocating the cluster:

- Follow steps 1 to 5 in DOC 1 (in the procedure section) while the cluster is in the current location and is still reachable. At step 6: instead of rebooting the CVMs, shut them down.

- Change the IP for the AHV hosts using DOC 2 (skip to 'Procedure' and follow steps 1.a to 1.f, the rest of the document is not applicable)

- Confirm that the host IPs have changed (you will need to do this through IPMI since the host will no longer be reachable)

- Shut the hosts down

- You will also need to re-IP the IPMI (DOC 3). Since it's best to have the IPMI up at all times, you may do this before the relocation as the very last step, or after relocation as the very first step.

After relocating the cluster:

- Power the nodes on and check if the host is reachable over the network by pinging the new IP

- Once the hosts are reachable, SSH into the AHV nodes and check if the CVM is starting up as well.

- Once the CVM IPs are reachable, login to any CVM and resume following the steps in DOC 1 starting from step 7.

Before Stopping a Cluster:

  • Disable any “Protection Domains” in the cluster and make sure there is no ongoing replication occurring.
  • Make sure no “Fail” message appears when performing the NCC health check on the cluster.
  • Power off all the VMs running in the cluster.
  • Stop “Files” (previously AFS) if you are using it in the cluster.
