I am trying to setup single node cluster using Foundation VM.  The Nutanix AHV provision and installation consistently failure on PowerEdge server with following error:

CRITICAL clean_disks:151 Unable to initialize trusted storage device

I assume; the installation could be failure because of the primary SSD drives are 447G drives.  But I do have other storage drives installed that has enough storage spaces.

As per hardware compatibility list; I assume the installer might be looking at primary devices (/sda) of configs 960GB drives?   Is there a way I can point the installer to use drives /sde or sdf that has 3.5TB?

Are all disks SSD? Can you explain a bit more about all the disks in the system?

2x 447G

2x 745G

6x 3.5T 

 

In the documentation is stated: 

  • The minimum supported capacity is 960GB.

So I assume you need to remove the 4 smaller drives. But again, I need to know what type the drives are (NVME, SSD, HDD???)

What are the disks brands? What controllers are in the system? 

Are the 447G (480GB) NVME drives? To which controller are they attached? 

Are there more disks in the system for boot? 😉 (You get where I wanna go here ;))


Thank you reformatting the information.  I tried 2 times reformatting the message before publishing it.  

The 447G are SSD (m.2 form factor) SATA drives attached BOSS embedded controller and manufacturer is Micron.  

The 745G (KIOXIA) and 3.5T (SAMSUNG) are SAS SSD attached to Dell HBA355i controller. 

Yes, I read the configuration minimum storage capacity is 960GB.  I will try replacing the smaller ones with larger capacity ones. 

Is it possible for installer to instruct use specific drive (in my case /sde to /sdj)? 

 

 


Ahh thanks for the clarification. This you need to do.

 

  1. Make a RAID1 from the 2 480GB NVME drives. 
    1. On this, AHV will be installed.
  2. Remove the 750G kioxia drives. They are not supported. 
  3. The 3.5T drives will be used for CVM and Data. Foundation will sort this out for you.

Just clarification, as you mentioned in step #1 make RAID 1 from the 2 480GB drives.  The server does not have NVMe SSD, it is SATA SSD of 447 GB capacity.   

If I configure RAID1 with these two drives, the max capacity will be still 447GB because of mirroring.  BTW, BOSS controller does not allow RAID-0.  As per the installer guide, the recommended storage is 960GB.  Not sure by configure RAID-1, does step #1 will go through?


Yes make it RAID1 not RAID0. And sorry I mean the m.2 card. Make those RAID1 and it will be used for AHV. This is described in the documentation as wel: 

 

Boot Drive

  • BOSS-S2 controller card + with 2 M.2 240GB or 480GB (RAID1)
  • BOSS-S1 controller card + with 2 M.2 240GB or 480GB (RAID1)

I would like to mention “Big Thank You” for providing the quick response to the installation problem.  Finally, installation is successfully completed after removing the drives that are not compatible with AHV installation! 

Suggestion on installation process:

  • Bypass the unsupported storage drives if the other supported drives are presence in the Server
  • Provide the option to choose the storage drives for installation.
