Question

Is IPMI connectivity mandatory

Hello,

We are running out of network ports in our datacenter so we thinking of reclaiming the existing Nutanix IPMI network cables and instead use KVM dongles for those. I want to check with everyone here to make sure that there are no functional issues with loosing IPMI connectivity or does Nutanix need IPMI connectivity all the time.

Let me know your recommendations.

i do not think it is required to have IPMI reachable for Nutanix to function, but you may receive errors in NCC checks as it has a parameter "ipmi_checks".
i do not know either if it is required to collect hardware errors in Prism or not, but my guessing is that it cannot collect logs without accessing IPMI over network "someone can correct me here"

Hi @Anand_gs

Nutanix cluster can work without IPMI connected to network since most of the hardware checks are done using in-band network from hypervisor using the ipmitool command, but I will really recommend you consider have some kind of remote access configured on nodes, cause in case of some failures on physical nodes, Nutanix support will need access to the console to perform node troubleshooting.

Also, keep in mind that depending of the node model and/or if not using some kind of advanced network settings (like LACP), you can share the same network port for data and IPMI, you just have to configure the IPMI to use the shared IPMI mode.
