What is the best way to rebuild a single node cluster to a 5 node cluster with all the VMs intact with minimal downtime?

Hello,

If the current single node will be part of the 5 node cluster then I’d build a new 4 node cluster first, replicate the VMs over (minimal downtime) then expand the 4 node cluster to consume the original single as 5th node.

If the current node is not part of the new cluster then you could build out the 5 node cluster, then replicate from the single node over onto the 5 node with minimal downtime.

Hope this helps,

Kim

Can I ask when i add the current single node to the 4 node cluster. Do i need to destroy the cluster before joining or this will be automated when i join the single node to the 4 node cluster.

I also read that no license reclaiming is required for dark site licensing, will the license be intact after joining to the 4node cluster?

Hi there,

As part of the expansion operation you can select to foundation/reimage the host before bringing it in, but if it was me I’d destroy the cluster on the single node once you’ve migrated all of the VMs just to keep it clean.

You should be fine per the docs to not reclaim the license if its a dark site, you’d need to generate a new cluster summary file (csf) from Prism Central once you’ve got your newly built cluster. https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/details?targetId=License-Manager:lmg-licmgr-managing-license-dark-site-key-c.html
