When is CVM and Host maintenance mode needed and why? | Nutanix Community

Hi

My Nutanix Cluster System is in Darksite(no internet) so require to do a Download and bring it to direct upload.

I am still confused on why and when do we need to put the CVM and host in maintenance mode? as the upgrade guide did not mention about putting the CVM or host in maintenance mode as per below.

Procedure

  1. On Prism Central clusters, do these steps.
    1. Perform an LCM inventory, which also updates the LCM framework. Do not upgrade any other software component except LCM in this step.
    2. Upgrade and run Nutanix Cluster Check (NCC) on Prism Central.
    3. Upgrade Prism Central.
  2. On Prism Element clusters, upgrade LCM and NCC, then run NCC.
    1. Perform an LCM inventory, which also updates the LCM framework. Do not upgrade any other software component except LCM in this step.
    2. Upgrade and run NCC.
  3. On Prism Element clusters, upgrade remaining software.
    1. If it has been more 24 hours since the last LCM inventory, perform an LCM inventory.
    2. Upgrade Foundation.
    3. Upgrade Cluster Maintenance Utilities.
    4. Upgrade AOS.
    5. Perform available firmware updates (BIOS/BMC/Host boot drive or other critical firmware as recommended by LCM).
    6. Upgrade AHV for AHV clusters, then perform an LCM inventory again and upgrade any available software (such as Files, License Manager (LM) agent, and other Nutanix software installed on the Prism Element cluster) or firmware.

After upgrading AHV, you might need to update admin and nutanix user credentials as described in the AHV Administration Guide topic AHV Host Access.

    7. Upgrade cluster hypervisor hosts other than AHV, then perform an LCM inventory again and upgrade any available software (such as Files, License Manager (LM) agent, and other Nutanix software installed on the Prism Element cluster) or firmware.
    8. Run NCC again.

I thought the CVM and Host are required to be put in maintenance mode before the host I/O are upgrade and updates? like Step 3 no 5? Why didn't’t it mention?

Please advise.

Hello,

Hope you’re well.

LCM will deal with the maintenance mode activities for you, you don’t need to worry about them.

If you’re using a dark site web server you simply point LCM to it with the relevant bundles extracted on there and it will inventory and deal with the upgrade plan etc.

If you are on a new enough version to not need the webserver you can direct upload in LCM to upload the LCM bundles directly.

LCM will deal with telling the CVM/hosts about maintenance mode etc as it works around them upgrading.

Cheers,

Kim
