Query RE Async Replication Conditions

We have 2 Nutanix clusters running with the ESXi Hypervisor. We’re using Metro availability to replicate datastores\containers between clusters. We’d like to replicate some of the VMs that reside in these Metro enabled containers over to a potential 3rd site.  We were thinking to use Async replication for this.

Is this possible and is it supported?

I ask this because in the “Conditions For implementing Asynchronous Replication” guidelines there is a condition that states “Multiple protection domains cannot protect the same VM.  Configure one protection domain to protect a VM”.

While I have not personally created/used any Metro style protections, I think I found the ‘nugget’ of info you’re looking for in the official Metro documentation/best practice guide: Metro Availability

Search for keyword: “Asynchronous Snapshot Workflows”

It clearly states what you’re wanting IS supported.

“Nutanix supports the use of local and remote snapshots in combination with Metro Availability. Administrators can schedule snapshots between the clusters used for Metro Availability as well as to a third cluster outside of the Metro relationship, as shown in the following figure.”

I would mention that there ARE some Asynchronous restrictions in some cluster cases (but mostly around single or double node clusters.). I would also highly encourage to open a “Question” ticket w support to verify/make sure things would work out as you expect it… (snapshots/snapshot pruning does take up CPU cycles, not to mention timing of the Async job is something to be tested/verified w support IMHO).

Great, yes I read that too.

That’s really useful and thanks for replying so quickly.  The wording in the Async guide is a bit misleading.
