Upgrade query on AOS 7.3 with PC2022.9 running Hyper-V 2022 (Hypervisor)
Hello Nutanix Community,
I have customer who is planning to upgrade AOS 6.5 to AOS 7.3 with PC 2022.9 running on Hyper-V 2022 from our Nutanix Cluster. They cannot upgrade to PC 2024.2 or higher (PC 7.3) due to Hyper-V 2022 is not supported on this latest PC versions.
Customer is asking if they can upgrade AOS 7.3 only? And still manage the cluster via PC 2022.9?
May I know If there is any performance, support, licensing, and operational impact If customer continues on AOS 7.3 w/ PC2022.9?
I understand that PC2022.9 is already EOSL and our SRE may not able to assist if running on EOSL version.
I did check AOS 7.3 to PC version compatibility unfortunately it doesn’t show PC2022.9.
Note that customer is not ready to move yet to AHV due to internal application dependencies and business directions. They are also not using the Prism Central except for managing the NCI Pro license.
Looking forward for your helpful response.
Thanks and regards,
OJ

You cannot upgrade AOS 6.5 to 7.3. You first need to go to AOS 6.10 and then you can go to 7.3.
If Prism Central is not registered with the AOS cluster hosting it, refer to KB-10596 for additional requirements before upgrading.
Prism Central 2022.9 and later versions no longer support CLI-based PCBR. A pre-upgrade check blocks upgrade to Prism Central 2022.9 or later versions if a CLI-based PCBR setup is detected.Nutanix recommends removing the CLI-based PCDR configuration before upgrade and enabling Prism Central Backup and Restore (PCBR) post-upgrade. For more information, see Prism Central Backup, Restore, and Migration, KB-13875 and KB 9599.
Nutanix does not support Prism Central and its managed clusters in NAT-deployed environments.
If a single-node Prism Central VM is upgraded to Prism Central 2022.9 or later versions, but the underlying Prism Element is not running AOS 6.6, a precheck prevents the scaling out of Prism Central VM from 1-node to 3-node Prism Central.
I have checked the AOS 7.3 to PC 2022.x.x compatibility. It appears only supported on PC7.3.x.x. But I need to check and test in hosted environment if it can technically managed the cluster on AOS 7.3 with PC2022.9.
The alternative solution we are planning to do is unregister / disconnect between PC and Cluster PE. Then once successfully upgraded from AOS 6.5 → 6.10 → 7.3 we can register it back again to PC2022.x.x
Not sure if anyone have done this before to be able to run Hyper-V 2022 on AOS 7.3 without having the pressure of upgrading to PC2024.2.x or higher (PC7.3) which does not support Hyper-V 2022.
The image below shows my customer current HW XC750-14 core. This shows support for Hyper-V 2022 on AOS 7.3. Hope PC 2024.x.x or higher PC 7.3.x.x will support Hyper-V 2022 soon, since it clearly supported on AOS 7.3.
We are aware on the support impact: PC2022.9 is already EOSL, and we may not be able to get official SRE support or they might require exceptional approval from account team for issues encountered with an EOL version.
Note that customer does not use PC, and mainly using it only for the purpose of licensing the cluster with NCI Pro (Cloud Platform Licensing) through PC.
Thanks and regards,
OJ
if they have a vmware cluster , they can try to install PC in it as well.
