Removing the G5-Nodes from the cluster.

Hi  I am new to the Nutanix and want to know clarity on  below query.

Please any body help me on below query,

we have  a five  Nutanix node cluster and out of five node cluster three of them G5-Nodes which warranty will be completed on 31-oct-2023. reset of two nodes G8-nodes which we were added recently to the cluster.

Now we are planning to remove the three G5-Nodes from the cluster and if we remove three G5-nodes,two nodes will be there and it become a two nodes cluster.

if it is a two node cluster there no witness vm for redundancy.

 

Now My Questions are below like.

 

1.       Is there any possibility of removing 3 nodes from the existing cluster?

            A. Removing the 3 (G5) Node from the existing RF2 cluster is not possible. (2Node Cluster                         and  RF2 based cluster are designed for different Infra)

            B. RF2 to 2 node cluster is not supported by Nutanix engineering Team.

         

2. What will happen after the License expires?

          A. Replacement of hardware will not be supported.

          B. All acropolis and services will continue to run.

          C. Node expansion and removal are possible even when the license expires.

You cant remove nodes until you have a 2 node cluster. 3 nodes is the minimum. But if you have a RF3 cluster you cant go below 5 nodes. And if you have storage containers with erasure coding enabled you cant go below 4 nodes. 

 

So you need to buy an extra G8/G9 node and add that to the cluster. So you have a 3 node cluster with the G8 nodes.

 I don't understand the below point can you please explain little more that will be easy to understand me.

Ok I see you have a RF2 cluster (Redundancy Factor). So you cannot go below 3 nodes.

But you had a 5 node cluster. So it is possible that erasure coding is enabled on a container. If so, you cannot go below 4 nodes. (Disable Erasure coding is the only solution then)

Hi,

RF2 Cluster cannot go below 3 Nodes. even 2-node cluster is not supported with all Hardware models only 1175s Series support 2-node cluster configuration.

 

2. What will happen after the License expires? You will lose support the node which reached end of life. Acropolis services will continue to run but you cannot upgrade to latest build  as upgrade precheck failed with the error old hardware exist in the cluster.
