How Power off Nutanix with VMware ESXi Host | Nutanix Community
Skip to main content
Hi Expert,

I plan to relocate my Nutanix Box to another rack. can someone help me or guide me the proper procedure for this activity, below the details

Hypervisor: ESXi 5.5

Nutanix Box: 4box

Node: 16 node

How can I perform the proper shutdown. I a bit confuse with some article from google
Do you already have workload on this system?

If so, it would be worth while to open a support ticket to dig into the details, to see if we could leverage the block awareness feature to do an entire block at once.
Hi Jon,

Yes, already workload on this Nutanix. 20+ VMs Client install

Please advise
Hey,

Cluster shut down

  1. Stop all guest VM'sapplication - (leave CVMs powered on) - if you host vCenter on Nutanix. Powerd it off too (at the very end)note down ESXi host where vCenter was running
  2. Shutdown ESXi hosts - one by one.
  3. disconenct cables
  4. move nodes to second rack
Cluster start

  1. connect power and network cables
  2. start all nutanix nodes - wait 10 minutes
  3. log in to CVM over SSH
  4. run # cluster status command - verify if all services on all CVMs are UPyou can run also cluster status | grep -i down - this will filter all services with status DOWN
  5. if cluster is up and running - power vCenter server (connect to host where vCenter was up and runnig)
  6. power all guest Vms
let me know if yoou have more questions.
Artur is correct, and please note that the procedure above requires that you have the ability to shutdown the VM's and stop the cluster.

If you do not, you could move all of the VM's off of the 4 nodes you want to move, and remove each from the Nutanix cluster one by one (as in logically remove it from the cluster, using Prism).

It would take a while for all the data to move around and so on, but would keep the rest of the cluster online while it did it.
Hi Artur & Jon

Thanks for assistant 🙂
Hi Artur,

In step below, not step for cluster shutdown? also Nutanix Node ( ESXi Host ) just power off from vCenter. How about Nutanix Box? can you advise. Need answer to my boss this question. Hope you can help me on this

Hey,

let's start frm beginning

Terminology:

Host - ESXi host

CVM - Nutanix CVM - part of Nutanix cluster

vCenter - vCenter :D

You do not have to stop Nutanix cluster prior stopping ESXi hosts. Most important is to stop all Guest VMs before shutdown ESXi hosts. VCenter should be powered off at the end - this will make guest Vms shutdown process easier.

By default - CVM on every ESXi is configured to start and stop with the host automatically. So, when you shutdown (not power off) ESXi host, CVM will gracefullly shutdown as well. Same with powering ESXi node up.

When you move all nodes to new rack, power all ESXi hosts at once. All CVM will boot up, more less, the same time and Nutanix cluster will start automatically.

Let me know if you have more questions.
Dear Artur,

Thanks for your explanation 🙂. will forward to My Boss
