Hello Team,

While deploying the cluster using Foundation Tool, is there any way to provide pre-reserved CVM names anywhere before initiating the cluster build process through this tool?

If not, how can change the name of CVM (inside OS) after cluster got built? How much risky is this process?

You feedback/help in this matter will be highly appreciated.

Also, please confirm that what will be the FQDN for CVM - the name showing in Prism Element or the name showing inside OS of CVM?

As per my understanding, the FQDN should be pointing to name inside OS of CVM only. Correct, me if i am wrong.

Tehre is a difference in the name shown in prism and the name showing inside the cvm.

Renaming the cvm is documented here: https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/kbs/details?targetId=kA032000000TUjkCAG

Renaming the CVM showing in Prism is documented here: https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/kbs/details?targetId=kA03200000004yQCAQ

There is no FQDN the is only a hostname. And the hostname is the one inside the cvm.

Thanks, @JeroenTielen - i got your point that there will be no FQDN need to assign to CVM. Its simply a hostname showing inside CVM OS.

Here is my requirement - i need to match CVM name inside OS with CVM name showing in Prism. If i am going to follow steps mentioned in below provided link, will it create any issue with Stargate, Zookeeper, Gensis or Prism or will it work smoothly after name change inside CVM OS? Please suggest.

If you follow the guide from Nutanix then you are good to go.

thanks, @JeroenTielen  - I am sure that you are referring to below KB article only, correct? And after changing the CVM name inside OS, it won’t impact those running services.

@JeroenTielen  -  also any idea, if we have any option to provide CVM name while deploying cluster through Foundation VM? If so, please guide me through.

Correct. Keep in mind the cvm needs to reboot and that there are rules:

  • Start with NTNX-
  • End with -CVM (-PCVM for Prism Central, -FSVM for Nutanix Files)
  • A CVM (or Prism Central VM) reboot is necessary for the change to take effect, which is prompted after the change.

Dont know to be honest. I never change them. As they are only been seen by the Nutanix admin who really logs on via SSH ;) So no big deal for changing them.
