File level backup and recovery with Acropolis hypervisor

Badge +3
Does anyone have thoughts on how backup and recovery will work with the Acropolis hypervisor?

Our company is definitely interested in moving in this direction, but the simplicity of Veeam B&R has been great, and I do not want to move away from that unless there is a solution that provides all of veeams features.

Hi Dan,

We will be having our "Nutanix DR" capabililties in our 4.5 release upcoming. That would be Nutanix to Nutanix replication.

Our product team is working with other "ecosystem" vendors as well so we can have 3rd party support for Acropolis hypervisor. Veeam has definitly been discussed as a great partner we would love to have as a partner with Acropolis.

We are interested in using veeam as well. Unfortunately when we engaged our rep asking if Acropolis hypervisor support was on the horizon his answer was "Whats that?".

Hi,
Anything new already about backing up using the Acropolis hypervisor?

A few customers wants to move to Acropolis, but without any backup solution, it will be tough.

Hi

Looks like we will have Commvault support for AHV shortly, followed by other partners in 2016.

Hi ,

Thanks for your research.

I assume, you don't know what the other partners are, and whch quarter we are talking about...

To be more specific, I just want to know if Veeam is going to support AHV. Commvault is not really a tool for some customers.

Hi

We are actively looking at broadening our parter ecosystem around Backup, but no firm dates at the moment. We will keep this thread apprised when things firm up.

Until then, we recommend either using our CommVault integration (expected end of this year) or using Nutanix native snapshots for local operational recovery and native replication to a 2nd Nutanix cluster for remote copies. If you don't have a 2nd site, we also support snapshot replication into the public cloud (AWS).

Thanks,Tim

In addition to the native snapshot and replication capability, we will also enable self-service recovery from local snapshots so that VM users can recover individual files and folders from any local snapshot. This is one of the most common scenarios that all our customers have been asking for, and we will enable this capability for Acropolis Hypervisor in 1H CY2016.

Hi ,
Just to confirm something, Veeam will not support AHV anytime soon.
Speaking to the Anton Gostev at Veeam he assured me of two things:

  1. Veeam V10 - Q4 2016 will not have integration with Nutanix to perform backup from snapshots. Veeam has this today with HP and NetApp, EMC VNX arrives with V9 next month.
  2. Veeam are not looking at building integration with other Hypervisors at this time.
I encourage you to jump into the Veeam forums and express your interest in AHV and Veeam integration. People like Anton Gostev are actively monitoring these forums.

Thanks

Darryl

Is DELL Appassure one of the partners? Seeing its a nutanix partner for its appliances...

I've already put in a request on the DELL side, but would be good to see requests from nutanix side as well

Hi

Commvault product manager here, working on the integration and partnership with Nutanix. Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can assist you in any way. We believe in giving our customers choice - Data protection shouldn't lock you in to choosing a Hypervisor or infrastructure that is not the best fit. To that point, we support 4 Hypervisors today and very soon AHV will be our 5th once generally available (March) - And don't think we are stopping there :)

We announced AHV support yesterday - you can read about it here and see a sneak peak of protecting and recovering . We also have IntelliSnap (hardware snapshot) support avaliable today for VMware and Hyper-V with Nutanix.

We're just getting started with Nutanix, a great partner with amazing tech!

Cheers,
-Damian

Hey Tony,

Any update to this?

In SP5 (just released a couple weeks ago) we added windows File level recovery for AHV Virtual Machines. In SP4 we could only really do Unix VMs due to a tiny issue about AHV telling us what the guest OS was, but we have worked around that and now file/folder provide recovery for Windows.

We also extended IntelliSnap support to AHV! So now you can leverage the power of individual VM hardware snapshots, perform instant reverts (PIT recoveries) and also convert those snapshots to a disk, tape or cloud backup copy for long term retention.

Some other cool pieces on the way too but one step at a time!

I know this is an old thread, but if anyone is still looking for backup solution for Acropolis, vProtect by Catalogic Software is a great option. The best part about it for us is that it integrates directly with our existing IBM Spectrum Protect environment, but can use tons of other backup destinations like NFS as well. I can push the VM backups straight into Spectrum Protect for storage. I can even manage my snapshot schedule from the UI as well.
