Long shot i know, but i’m wondering if anyone every solved the issue of VSS backups failing after June 2022 Update on Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts.

Veeam has this KB Article that references a workaround/fix:  https://www.veeam.com/kb4333

However, it’s not at all clear how i would make a domain account an administrator/backup operator on the File Server that hosts the SMB3.0 share (the cvm..)

Can you please share some details on the backup job is it VM backup are failing or NAS Backup is failing as mention article is addressing the NAS Backup Policy.

If those SMB 3.0 shares are added to Veeam Backup & Replication with the "Backup from Microsoft VSS snapshot" option enabled, the NAS Backup job(s) protecting those SMB 3.0 shares may fail with the following error:

Hello @tysw

  • Configure one consistency group for each VM. That is, each consistency group must consist of one VM. If the consistency group includes more than one VM, the system ignores the application-consistent snapshot feature.
  • enable Microsoft VSS services
  • Guest VMs with delta, SATA, and IDE disks do not support Nutanix VSS recovery points.
  • Guest VMs with iSCSI attachments (LUNs) do not support Nutanix VSS recovery points
  • Application-consistent Snapshots requires NGT to be installed on the guest OS.
  • Only the following applications support application-consistent snapshots without pre-freeze and post_thaw scripts:

    • Microsoft Exchange 2010
    • Microsoft Exchange 2013
    • Microsoft Exchange 2016
  • If you need fully featured application consistency (for example, log truncation for SQL), deploy Veeam agents instead of or in addition to agentless AHV backups. If your license is VUL, then you won’t need extra license.

The issue is with HyperV VM backup jobs.

This seems to be applicable to workloads on AHV unless i’m misreading this.

We do run AHV as well, and i’d be curious if these steps/considerations are documented somewhere as i’d be interested in more carefully reviewing this.

Here is the document for Nutanix Application-consistent Snapshots with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) for AHV and ESXi only:

https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/details?targetId=Prism-Element-Data-Protection-Guide-v6_5:wc-dr-application-consistent-snapshots-wc-r.html

Could you please share with us the Hardware model, AOS version and Hyper-V version?
