Create Test Environment Alongside Production Environment
Hello Everyone! I am using AHV and would like to create a duplicate of my production environment alongside the actual production environment. The point is that we have some highly specialised network software that needs to be tested as though in the actual environment before we actually deploy it there. This software is frequently updated and occasionally an update creates havoc, requiring lots of downtime and restoration of significant portions of the network. So what i am looking for is to have a protected space in AHV that thinks and behaves identically to our production environment (but with no actual interaction with the real network or the internet ... just via AHV consoles.) Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!
Migrate Data to Hyper-V cluster from another Hyper-V Cluster
What is the best approach to migrate data to a nutanix hyper-v failover cluster from a normal hyper-v failover cluster. I used export from the old host (Whitelisted in PRISM) and it succeeds fine but as the data is exported to the cluster FQDN, how do I know which node to use to import the files to make best use of data locality? is there a way to have the VM exported to a specific node?
Red Hat support
Hi I am an absolute noob so please be gentle to me. Can I know if Nutanix supports applications built that run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux? Basically, I have many applications that run on RHEL 7 that I am in the process of virtualizing using RHEV. So when I googled and saw this article below I was curious if Nutanix really supported RHEL and RHEV? http://www.computerweekly.com/news/2240173672/Nutanix-supports-Red-Hat-KVM-in-upgraded-storage-stack-hardware-and-OS Can someone confirm?
I cannot expand the cluster.
Hi,I cannot expand the cluster when Pre expand-cluster tests were failed and error message was "Failure in pre expand-clustrer tests.Errors:Failed to get vlan tag of node:XXXXX" on Prism Element.CVM and HyperVisor Network use Tagged VLAN and PortChannel in L2 switch ports.Ping to HyperVisor’sManagement IP from other NW segment is OK.Of course, CVM and HyperVisor’sManagement IP are same segment.Should I do any other? VM creation automation
Hello All,I am new to Nutanix and AHV; however, I have a large amount of experience with Hyper-v and SCVMM. One of the things I am trying to do is automate the creation of a vm’s. My end goal is to take an “image” base drive I have uploaded to images containing an install of my windows OS.Deploy a new vm with that image, have a static IP assigned to the new vm automatically from a pool of IP’s, join my domain, and run a few powershell scripts in the VM. I would have done this all with an IP pool and a template in SCVMM and as much as I have read about templates in AHV I am not seeing anything like it. Am I missing something here?Do we have a resource on how to configure something like this?
Cisco Unified Communications on Nutanix
Next Community, Nutanix has developed Best Practices for designing and deploying Cisco Unified Communications on Nutanix. I wanted to share those resources with you here in the community and use this space to talk about the subject. Microsoft Exchange Server
Is anyone running Microsoft Exchange on their Nutanix cluster? If so, approximately how many mailbox databases (EDBs) are you running and what is the approximate size of each? Also, overall feedback/thoughts of the performance of your Exchange environment on the Nutanix cluster?
VM Disk Greater Than 2TB Issue
We’re running 2 clusters which are pretty much configured the same running ESxi 7.02 AOS 5.20.4 LTS both running on nutanix hardware. One cluster is totally fine no issues but the other you cannot create a virtual disk greater than 2Tb! The issue only came to light when we had to move a VM off to another non-nutanix host for a few days then when we went to vmotion it back it errored complaining about the disk being greater than 2Tb, it is its nearly 6Tb as its a fortinet analyzer. I’m pretty sure when the VM was sat on the nutanix cluster its disk was greater than 2Tb and it was thin provisioned with a capacity of 7Tb when it was created! So you can’t move anything to any of the datastores that are greater than 2Tb and you also can’t create a new disk greater than 2TB. Also if you take a look at the datastores details it says maximum VM disk size 2TB, on the other clusters datastore it says 62Tb. It's getting to be a bit of a pain as the fortinet analyzer is sitting on a box we want
ESXi 6.7u3 Patch - 1-click upgrade - Not compatible with current VIBs
I ugraded my ESXi hosts using 1-click upgrade to VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.7.0.update03-15160138.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A04 with no issues. Trying to apply patch ESXi670-202004002.zip using 1-click upgrade and get the following error: Upgrade bundle is not compatible with current VIBs installed in hypervisor. [DependencyError] VIB QLC_bootbank_qedi_126.96.36.199-1OEM.6188.8.131.5269922 requires qedentv_ver = X.11.15.0, but the requirement cannot be satisfied within the ImageProfile. I am able to successfully patch using esxcli and update manager. I updated the image profile to DellEMC-ESXi-6.7U3-15160138-A04 on the hosts thinking that may resolve the issue but this did not work. Anyone have any suggestions to get 1-click upgrade to function with 6.7u3?
Use Nutanix Storage for a VMware external Cluster
We have a dozen or so VMs/appliances that do not support AHV and thus cannot be migrated over to our new AHV cluster that runs 95% of our servers. We would like to expose a container/Volume Group from Nutanix to the VMware hosts as NFS datastores to build these VMs/Appliances on. Our goal is to then replicate that Container/Volume Group to our DR Nutanix cluster and then connect our DR VMware cluster for the same VMs/Appliances to then use as well incase of failover. We have gotten conflicting information from all parties and wanted to know if anyone was already doing this and what your results are? These VMs/Appliances would have fairly high IO.
Does Nutanix Support SQL Cluster on ESXI5.5?
Hi All , As you know that to build a SQL cluster on vmware vsphere 5.5 I need to create RDM disk for both cluster's nodes with physical compitilty , and this will eliminate the vsphere from running vmotion (need to shutdown the host to migrate )since it is not supported. My question is : does nutanix support create a SQL cluster ? and how they will replace the RDM (the physical LUN)? And for licensing :Does nutanix base license support building critical application clusters for free? Regards,
DataCenter Refresh and the Nutanix Sizer for the Dell Product Line
The customer I currently support has a pair of Nutanix clusters running on the Dell PowerEdge XC630-10 harward platform. They have really enjoyed the performance and overall gain (simplicity of the design, reduction in administration/alerts, etc.) since moving to the Nutanix platform. The topic of a server refresh has arisen, and we're beginning to collect all the different metrics we will need to analyze to support this effort. After that's done, though, the planning and designing will begin. In the past, I've used the Nutanix Sizer. That since seems to be locked away behind a Nutanix/Partner Login page now? Does this still exist? Is there one that supports the Dell hardware platform line? Any other workload sizing resources for the theoretical migration planning would be much appreciated. Thanks, in advance!
How Power off Nutanix with VMware ESXi Host
Hi Expert, I plan to relocate my Nutanix Box to another rack. can someone help me or guide me the proper procedure for this activity, below the details Hypervisor: ESXi 5.5 Nutanix Box: 4box Node: 16 node How can I perform the proper shutdown. I a bit confuse with some article from google
CVM Resources Allocation
Hey Everyone. So, I am relatively new to the whole Nutanix game. Im curious what everyone is suggestion is for CVM allocation. We had nutanix do our original provisioning, but the provisions the installer set it up with seem a bit excessive. 10 Cores and 32gb ram per CVM, Any thoughts?
RDP Connections Freezing - Windows Server 2022
RDP to guest vm’s running Windows Server 2022 are freezing a few seconds after connecting. Running latest VirtIO drivers 1.1.7. After rebooting the guest, RDP seems to work ok for an hour or so before freezing again. Guest memory utilization 48%, CPU 3-5% so no issue there.
2TB vmdk to AHV Migration
Hi, I have a standalone ESX 5.1 server with a VM with multiple 2TB (screenshot from WinScp attached below) vmdk volumes. VM is Windows 2008 R2. My Nutanix cluster is running 5.01, NCC 184.108.40.206, AHV 20160925.30 - Starter Edition I am planning to use a Windows 2012 R2 server with WinSCP to get the vmdk files onto the Nutanix cluster container (I have multiple containers) and then use the Image service (via Chrome browser) to upload/convert via UNC to the container. Here are my questions:

I'm wondering if there are any limitations on the Image Server when using the Chrome Browser
Any potential issues with these vmdk sizes?
What is the syntax for the URL to access the Storage Container so I can upload the vmdk without using the UNC? -Figure this one out. In Image Service use nfs://clusterip/Containername/name ofvmdk-flat.vmdk
Since I need to upload multiple vmdk files that quite large, can/should I open multiple browsers to get simultaneous uploads happeni
Server 2012r2 CHKDSK /SDCLEANUP crashes VM Everytime
We have a fresh Windows Server 2012R2 VM that we ran CHKDSK /SDcleanup on. After running for a period of time, the server VM turns off with no errors logged other than the fact that it was an unexpected shutdown. At first we thought something was corrupt, and since it wasn't in production yet we decided to just recreate the VM from scratch. Immediately after creating the new VM, we ran the same command and got the same results. It crashed while running on the C: drive running on boot up as well as on the 4tb data drive with zero data on it yet. So far we have been able to duplicate it everytime. We have a Xen Server with a Server 2012R2 VM on it and there is no issue running this command. Any ideas? Driver issue? Thanks Steve
AD DC on Nutanix Hyper-V
Hi I found the KB below stating you can't virtualize domain controllers on Nutanix Hyper-V. https://portal.nutanix.com/#/page/kbs/details?targetId=kA032000000TTGWCA4 Quote: "Why? Because Hyper-V wants to contact the AD server before it can power up any VM on Nutanix storage, and the AD server would not be available because the VM cannot be booted." I am of the understanding that this might have been a thing in up until 2008 R2, but this should not be a problem when running Hyper-V on 2012 R2. Anyone that could shed some light on the matter? Would like to call the support line, but that is not an option right now since it has nothing to do with our own nutanix nodes. EDIT: Solved. Found out it is due to the SMB3 share of the nutanix cluster, which requires authentication from the domain.
MS SQL Clusters - Multiple SCSI Controllers
Hi All-I am in the process of creating some MSCS SQL Clusters on Server 2012R2 . In the applicable documentation in regards to using iSCSI-based VGs with Nutanix. Also read Mike Websters information about hot expaning the disks associated with those VGs in an upcoming software release, really nice! My question is about how I break the I/O over the multiple VMWare P/V SCSI controllers currently. If I followed the instructions in https://portal.nutanix.com/#/page/solutions/details?targetId=BP-2049_Acropolis_Block_Services:BP-2049_Acropolis_Block_Services Wouldn't all the I/O go over the default and only SCSI controller for that VM? I am trying to distribute the I/O for logs, tempDB, etc over multiple SCSI controllers. It was worked well in our environment in which we leverage RDMs and would like to try to repeat this on the Nutanix side. Can
HyperV/Nutanix (SMB), VM import from Hyper-V manager
Hi, I'm trying to import a VM using hyper-V manager but it is always saying "can't access folder, you might have not permission to access this folder" and tried to check all VMs and the same issue shows up. Any idea why this error is there? I'm thinking about modifying the permissions on VM folder, can we? knowing that i'm trying to access the VM folder from container share path [example: \container_name.........] We are running hyperV2012R2 on nutanix 4.7.1 Thank you, Pierre
