Windows Boot F8 Delay

Hi, When using AHV, is there a way to set the black (pre-boot) screen in the VM duration longer. I was trying to press the F8 key, to get into directory restore mode/safe mode, but the black (pre-boot) screen raced by... Thanks G

Live Cloning VM drives to another VM

Hi everybody we are just in the beginning of the process of migrating our environment from VMWare to AHV. One of the scenarios that we need to consider for one of our application sets involves cloning an entire drive from a build server to a reporting server. Essentially right now I have a server that takes data and compiles it into a finished product on an intermittent basis.  When the server completes it’s build it calls another script that clones the drive to a reporting server.  Our reporting server has duplicate drives 1 online and 1 offline, the script overwrites the offline drive, then gets the drives to swap online state so that our clients are now reporting on the newly refreshed data. I am looking to replicate this concept and am hoping for a few pointers. In our existing environment I am making use of some of the storage commands for the disk clone.  I am hoping to understand how to replicate the disk clone from an AHV hosted Windows server. Would anybody have any sugge

Understanding and knowing where a Virtual Machine stores its vDisk is important for Admins. AHV vcpu vs vcores

Hi, We just fired up a 3 node cluster HX1310 with AHV. Trying to keep things lean and mean... When a Windows guest needs more CPU, is it "better" to go with more vcores or more vcpu in AHV? I'm asking from a performance perspective and perhaps licensing perspecitve..... Thanks, G

Logging VM Activity Events in Prism

There was a thread back in 2016 regarding getting VM activity events logged in Prism (PE or PC).  Events such as powering on and off a VM should be displayed in PE or PC so we can try to track down when a reboot may have occurred easily.  This has been a core VMware vCenter function for ages, but is glaringly absent in Prism for AHV. My company is in the middle of the AHV conversion right now, and my teammates are asking me how to find out about these events.  I don’t really like the idea of giving untrained folks access to the “nutanix” account on the CVM to look at acropolis.log.   In the 2016 thread, someone said enhancements are coming to Prism.  Are they still coming?

Using HashiCorp Packer to deploy a VM

Hello! I’m new to the Nutanix community.  Loving the tech so far, but... Has anyone used Packer to deploy Windows from within AHV? I’ve seen plenty of how-to’s on how to create a VM image that can be uploaded to AHV. I want to do the entire process within the cluster. Packer has a QEMU builder but not sure how I can tell it to build it on another VM within the cluster. I’m trying to replace my MDT image deployment process with something that can do Windows and Linux and is more RCS/git friendly. I’m not married to Packer so I’ll take suggestions on other possibilities. And if more detail is needed on what I’m doing currently or desired outcome let me know. Thanks in advance!

How to "size" a Nutanix cluster based on performance requirement?

Hi guys, we're planning to move/migrate my MS SQL workload from physical standalone host to a new Nutanix cluster. We already engaged with local Nutanix representative for this. However, we encountered a few hurdles in terms of performance during and we can't be sure whether we have the right sizing for our performance requirement. Current Production Physical host:- Processor: Intel Xeon E5-2690v3 @ 2.6GHz (single socket, 12C 24T) RAM: 96GB (However only 64GB usable for the MS SQL 2008R2 DB) Disks: Database MDF resides in a SSD RAID 5 diskgroup. (6 disks), OS and LDF etc resides in other disk groups, SAS disks 10K, 15K RAID 10, RAID 1 etc. Test Unit ( 3 nodes):- Processor: Intel Xeon E5-2650 v4 @ 2.2 GHz (dual socket, 24C 48T) per node RAM: 512GB per node Disks: 6 x 1.6TB Intel S3610 SATA (All Flash) Hypervisor: AHV 5.9.2.4 Network: 10GbE RJ45 SQL Test VM created in Nutanix test cluster:- 12 vCPU 96GB RAM CVM size: 12 vCPU 32GB RAM Test Result from MS SQL s

I cannot expand the cluster.

Hi,I cannot expand the cluster when Pre expand-cluster tests were failed and error message was "Failure in pre expand-clustrer tests.Errors:Failed to get vlan tag of node:XXXXX" on Prism Element.CVM and HyperVisor Network use Tagged VLAN and PortChannel in L2 switch ports.Ping to HyperVisor’sManagement IP from other NW segment is OK.Of course, CVM and HyperVisor’sManagement IP are same segment.Should  I do any other? As below, each of versions.・DELL XC640・AOS：5.10.6・ESXi：6.7 Update 2 (Build 13006603)

Cluster Memory Usage

So how much do you run your cluster memory usage? Currently we are at 50% usage but still adding VM's. My boss wants to run this to 100% and doesn't understand why I keep telling him this is a bad idea. I am trying to keep it at 2/3 to 3/4 usage of capacity. Am I right or wrong on this? I am doing a bad job of explaining this to my boss who doesn't seem to believe me so do you guys have any resources that can help me explain this? Right now we are running application servers and no core functions but we are looking to migrate our DHCP servers. We have 1.1 TB of memory capacity running at 51% usage. CPU usage is not a problem running at about 12%. Storage is also fine. We are running 6x Dell 740XC if that helps.

AHV - vDisk - Part - 4 : Changing BUS Type of a vDISK

In our previous posts, we briefly explored some basics of vdisk management on AHV via Acropolis cli (acli). You can explore further namespaces in acli by logging on to any CVM and entering the acli shell.In some scenarios you may need to move disk from IDE to SCSI bus or vice versa. Sample scenarios including but not limited to:VM does not boot due to missing SCSI driver.  In such scenario disk can be converted to IDE to install missing driver and then move back to SCSI. Wrong disk type was used during VM creation. Disk index should be changed due to application requirements.From the AHV Best Practices Guide:Nutanix recommends using SCSI-based disks wherever possible for maximum performance. We can use acli to change a virtual machine configuration, in this case a vm’s disk BUS Type.We would need the following info:Source VM Name or VM UUID Source VM DISK UUID (uuid of the vDisk with the incorrect BUS type) bus=target bus (for e.g. the new BUS type we want this vDisk to use, scsi / ide

KVM Hypervisor - Management

Hello all, I'm wondering if there is anyone out there using Nutanix with KVM as a hypervisor, and if so, what kind of management do you use for daily VM related admin jobs? - virsh/virt-manager ? - RHEV/virto ? - OpenStack on top? - other "cloud solution"? - custom tools/scripts ? Please share :) I'm quite curious about official / eventual cross-vendor support and/or "show-stoppers" you might have experienced or enlightenments you might have had.. P2V Windows 10 to AHV

Hi All, I am trying to migrate one Windows 10 PC to Nutanix Acropolis. I tried to run a full backup with Veeam endpoint and tried the baremetal recovery in to Nutanix and that did not work. I tried this method for almost all of our servers (but they are already on nutanix) to restore into our test environment (running Nutanix CE) with out any issues. But this time I am doing it with Physical device to virtual and did not work. So is there any other method to do this. I see a lot of topics here mentioned vCenter converter but I never used it. Is there any particular steps I need to be careful about when using that tool.  Thank you,

ESXi 6.0 Upgrade to 6.7U2

I'm trying to upgrade ESXi 6.0 to 6.7U2 but when try to do it from Prism im getting errors on DRS not enabled. Now we don't have DRS license, our cluster is ESXi 6.0 Standard License, is there any way to do the upgrade without the needs of DRS ?I read few documents that even if i try to use vCenter Update manager update will fail becasue DRS is not enabled. Any workaround solution ?

VMware ESXi Best Practices

Greetings community members! I am brand new to the Nutanix platform and have completed my basic initial configuration of my nodes on ESXi 5.5U2, however I am having trouble finding (not through lack of Google-fu) a complete guide on what Nutanix recommends as BPs for configuring hosts for ESXi. This raises some questions... e.g: Should I add anything to my node's Advanced Settings? Should I chanage the power settings Active Policy to High Performance? What is the definitive guide to HA settings with respect to the nodes, VM monitoring, policies therein, etcetera ? Virtual Machines automatic restart on AHV

Hello All, I have 01 NX-1065-G6 block including 3 nodes. AOS Version : 5.10.5 AHV Version : 20170830.279 After a power outage, I would like virtual machines to start automatically in a predefined order; for instance, domain controller first, Exchange server secondly, and so forth... With ESXi I can do this in a very simply manner. How to do this with AHV ? Please help. Thanks.

100% CPU Usage on all my hosts

In the last few weeks we have been experiencing complete host CPU usage at 100% on all of our host(6 of them). We were never this high. When the system is at this level no one can do much on the ystem for a few minutes. The biggest change we did was add Bitdefender Gravity Zone to our system. We have about 650 VMs on the system. Memory usage hovers between 50-60% on all the hosts. We are running ESXI hypervisor with VMware Horizon to run our VDI system. Anyone have an insight into this situation? Is there any tweaking I need to do? What could be causing this?

Server 2008 standard

Dear Community, I have an issue. I'm installing a Windows 2008 standard (not R2 nor SP1) on a AHV cluster and then I need the virtIO drivers. It works fine for the iSCSI passthrough driver and the baloon. But the Networking adapter is failed. It says drivers are not signed and cannot be verified, I bypass the warning and then it says there is an error, driver corrupt blablabla. I have tried the latest Nutanix virtIO without any luck - whatever OS version, they all failed. any magic idea ? Thanks ;)
