VM network Troubleshooting
Hello, If you use balance-slb, how does one figure out which physical is being used by one VM ? For instance, with ESXi I’d run esxtop, and I can see which physical nic is being “mapped” to my virtual nic. Is it possible with AHV? If yes how ? I think it is important when you troubleshoot.
Logging VM Activity Events in Prism
There was a thread back in 2016 regarding getting VM activity events logged in Prism (PE or PC). Events such as powering on and off a VM should be displayed in PE or PC so we can try to track down when a reboot may have occurred easily. This has been a core VMware vCenter function for ages, but is glaringly absent in Prism for AHV. My company is in the middle of the AHV conversion right now, and my teammates are asking me how to find out about these events. I don’t really like the idea of giving untrained folks access to the “nutanix” account on the CVM to look at acropolis.log. In the 2016 thread, someone said enhancements are coming to Prism. Are they still coming?
ESXi 6.7u3 Patch - 1-click upgrade - Not compatible with current VIBs
I ugraded my ESXi hosts using 1-click upgrade to VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.7.0.update03-15160138.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A04 with no issues. Trying to apply patch ESXi670-202004002.zip using 1-click upgrade and get the following error: Upgrade bundle is not compatible with current VIBs installed in hypervisor. [DependencyError] VIB QLC_bootbank_qedi_22.214.171.124-1OEM.6126.96.36.19969922 requires qedentv_ver = X.11.15.0, but the requirement cannot be satisfied within the ImageProfile. I am able to successfully patch using esxcli and update manager. I updated the image profile to DellEMC-ESXi-6.7U3-15160138-A04 on the hosts thinking that may resolve the issue but this did not work. Anyone have any suggestions to get 1-click upgrade to function with 6.7u3?
Display resolution in Windows Server 2016 (AHV-VM) stuck to 1280x1024
Ok, yesterday one of our many Nutanix clusters was upgraded to 5.15 LTS and I started to create a new Windows Server 2016 template using UEFI-configuration. Now I am stuck at display resolution of 1280x1024 and change is not possible, because it is grayed out. Nutanix Guest Tools from 5.15 LTS and VirtIO 1.1.5 are installed. Is this bug known and does there exist a work-around? What about 5.16 STS? Is it fixed there? Thanks for any reply. Regards, Didi7

ESXi | CVM shows 100% memory usage at all times in prism.
You might have noticed a 100% CVM memory usage in the Prism Element or high CVM memory usage alarms in vCenter. In vSphere 6.5 and later, this issue is seen with virtual machines configured with PCI pass-through devices. Symptoms: In the vSphere Web Client: CVMs trigger the Virtual machine memory usage alarm. The VM's Memory Usage/Active performance metric is continually reported as 100%. In Prism Web Console: CVM Memory Usage % is permanently shown as 100% There is nothing to worry about as this is just a cosmetic issue and has no effect on the CVM performance. The NCC health check report will not include any errors or warnings regarding memory usage. Similarly, o alert will be generated in the Prism Element. To take a detailed look at why ESXi displays CVM memory usage as 100% and the solution for the above, take a look at CVM Memory is 100% in Prism and Web Client with ESXi 6.5 or later
Should I stop the cluster to set Erasure Coding?
Hi, I'll create new cluster for 3 nodes that maybe expand. If I add node to cluster, Should I stop it to set Erasure Coding ? Or Should I set Erasure Coding at create new cluster before running user VMs ? I'm concerned about some impacts user VMs running on new cluster for that setting.

AOS 188.8.131.52 LTS - Error creating image from URL using PE, acli and REST API
Hi all I´m attempting to create one disk image from http server (I know that NFS is preferred) but i got errors from PE, acli and REST API. AHV, CVM, PE, PC and the web server are one the same network (then I can exclude routing issues) and on the web server (Centos 7.7, apache httpd-2.4.6-90) firewall and selinux are disabled and the url is called using IP to avoid dns issues. The content is available via wget but the image creation command ends with error 503 (Service Unavailable) while on the web server with log at debug level nothing is written on error and access log. I have tested also to stop httpd and use python -m SimpleHTTPServer 80 but doesn´t work (I got one excepction that I cannot fully read and I don´t know where is logged) What´s wrong? I´m missing something? Someone have a suggestion? Here some operation samples: Download test using wget to check http service ~~~ nutanix@cmv:~/tmp$ wget http://192.168.158.40/images/gm-back-test-001-scsi1.qcow2 --2020-03-17 16:
Best way to power down an Hyper-V cluster for extended time or relocation
Are you going to have a planned power outage or relocation procedure that needs to shut down your Hyper-V cluster safely? Maybe you have experienced this situation: We have a scheduled power outage at this location for Dec 31th. We are going to need to power everything down prior to the outage. What is the best way to safely power down the Hyper-V cluster? With Hyper-V Clusters it is important to consider the following procedure before shut down all the user VMs in the failover cluster : Make sure that you have at least one domain controller running outside of the Nutanix cluster. Otherwise, you will not be able to start VMs after powering on the cluster. Make sure that the Hyper-V hosts are configured to use this external DC/DNS server. Disable all Metro Availability-enabled Protection Domains, and make sure no on-going replication is happening. Consult the article Disabling Metro Availability for more details. To check the complete procedure and the details follow through to th
Download AHV image/vm disk from AOS 5.10 - scp error on port 2222
Hi all, I´m attempting to download one image from a cluster on port 2222 as described on many documents (i.e. AHV | How to access VM disk files on Nutanix container or Copy files to/from a containter ) and I have a strange issue: using Filezilla or Winscp it works fine, using Centos 7.7 Linux scp doesn´t work. A syntax as “scp -P 2222 admin@VCM-IP:/default-container-171248/.acropolis/vmdisk/image-or-disk-uuid” accept the password and then terminate with error “exec request failed on channel 0” On the linux side firewall & selinux have been disabled a scp to other systems works fine. Any suggestion?
NTP time sync in cluster consisting Hyper-V compute nodes and AHV storage nodes
Hi, I have a customer who is having a cluster of 11 Hyper-V 2016 compute nodes and 2 AHV storage nodes. During a NCC health check, there is an error mentioning that the 2 AHV nodes are not syncing with any NTP server. The current NTP time sync setup is something like this. Nutanix cluster (Hyper-V and AHV) → DC → NTP source First question, how should we begin troubleshooting the issue? There is no remote access for our support to perform a webex session troubleshooting due to security. Second question, customer is changing the NTP source. This new NTP source is 1-2 mins behind. Any impact if customer proceeds to update on the DC? Does the cluster auto sync up Third question, at what time intervals does the nutanix cluster probe or sync up with NTP time? Regards, Leonard Thng
Understanding NX GPU Solution
Let us consider a scenario where you are running specific workloads that require extensive video rendering and needs GPU-enhanced acceleration. Nutanix provides a solution in which the hardware is configured with GPU cards that allow video rendering to be passed through to the User Virtual Machine. Want to read about NVIDIA Grid vGPU on Nutanix? The following guide will help in understanding the architecture and requirements of handling it. Nvidia grid vGPU Guide So which hypervisors support this implementation? SQL Licensing - Moving From ESXi to AHV
I’m in the process of migrating from VMWare to AHV. I was curious if there are any licensing changes in regard to SQL. Do I need to just make sure that I have enough core licensing to run the actual VM or do I have to buy core licenses for every core on my entire 4 node cluster? I heard of something called infinity that I could use to keep my VM on just one node? Thanks for your help!
vServer LACP Issue
Hi there, I’m a network guy and this is my first time post here. Sorry if I broke any forum rule. We are having some issue with vServer host on Nutanix, and I would like to see if any experts here can tell the solution of the problem from nutanix stand-point. We have nutanix setup as LACP and connects to two nexus switches(5000) by using virtual port-channel. Sometimes mac address of vServer showed incomplete on arp table in one of the switches, not only one vServer. Then we finally realized that if we shutdown one port of the switch, which mac address incomplete in arp table, the vServer started to work immediately. After we executed no shut, the issue was back again. We checked the issue from switch stand-point, but couldn’t find any issue. Is anyone know the issue can be related to Nutanix? Thank you.
Nutanix space reclaimation
Hi Team, We are running few file servers (windows 2016 machines) which are running on Nutanix + VMware 6.5. For e.g. i have a 5TB VMDK attached to the VM which is holding up a lot of files (being a file server). Now when we check the size of this disk in VMware, we this as around 4TB consumed (similar figures in Prism as well). However within Windows, the actual space consumed is only 1 TB. The question is - how do we reclaim this space to match up the numbers seen by OS with what VMware believes the used space is. (i have seen some posts where users have mentioned using sdelete etc. but it isn’t really a scalable solution) Thoughts ? Thanks. Ravi
Windows 2019 Standard edition guest OS licensing on AHV
Hi, We have deployed couple of guest VMs on Windows 2019 Standard Edition OS on our 6 node cluster. Both the guests are configured with 1 VCPU with 2 cores along with 16 & 32 memory respectively. We have procured standard paper license of the OS. The hypervisors are running on AHV version 20170830.337 & AOS - 184.108.40.206 LTS. Is there any specific licensing model for Windows Server OS to run on AHV? How are the Windows licenses determined? Kindly help.
Network Series | Troubleshooting Networking on ESXi
You have a new Nutanix solution configured using ESXi hypervisor and you’re facing issues with Networking like packet drops and NIC configuration.
