Creating VM with Guest Customization script using Powershell cmdlets v2.0

OpenStack via VNC not working

ESXi | CVM shows 100% memory usage at all times in prism.

You might have noticed a 100% CVM memory usage in the Prism Element or high CVM memory usage alarms in vCenter. In vSphere 6.5 and later, this issue is seen with virtual machines configured with PCI pass-through devices. Symptoms: In the vSphere Web Client: CVMs trigger the Virtual machine memory usage alarm. The VM's Memory Usage/Active performance metric is continually reported as 100%. In Prism Web Console: CVM Memory Usage % is permanently shown as 100%   There is nothing to worry about as this is just a cosmetic issue and has no effect on the CVM  performance. The NCC health check report will not include any errors or warnings regarding memory usage. Similarly, o alert will be generated in the Prism Element.   To take a detailed look at why ESXi displays CVM memory usage  as 100% and the solution for the above, take a look at CVM Memory is 100% in Prism and Web Client with ESXi 6.5 or later

Application-consistent VM snapshots for recent versions of RHEL, CentOS, Windows Server

We are looking to do application-consistent snapshots of VMs running recent releases of RHEL, CentOS and Windows Server on AHV. However, the following document indicates that releases such as RHEL 7.4+, CentOS 7.4+ and Windows Server 2019 are not yet supported: Conditions for Application-consistent SnapshotsIs anybody having any issues with application-consistent snapshots for these releases? Some of these OS versions are not even that recent - RHEL 7.4 was released in August of 2017!

Virtual Machine High Availability

Virtual Machine High Availability (VMHA) ensures that VMs restart on another AHV host in the cluster if a host fails. VMHA considers RAM when calculating available resources throughout the cluster for starting VMs. VMHA respects affinity and anti-affinity rules. For example, with VM-host affinity rules, VMHA does not start a VM pinned to AHV host 1 and host 2 on another host when those two are down unless the affinity rule specifies an alternate host. There are two VM high availability modes:  Default: This mode requires no configuration and is included by default when installing an AHV-based Nutanix cluster. When an AHV host becomes unavailable, the VMs that were running on the failed AHV host restart on the remaining hosts, depending on the available resources. If the remaining hosts do not have sufficient resources, some of the failed VMs may not restart.  Guarantee This non-default configuration reserves space throughout the AHV hosts in the cluster to guarantee that all VMs can re

Virtual Machine Memory and CPU Hot-Plug Configurations

Memory and CPUs are hot-pluggable on guest VMs running on AHV. You can increase the memory allocation and the number of CPUs on your VMs while the VMs are powered on. You can change the number of vCPUs (sockets) while the VMs are powered on. However, you cannot change the number of cores per socket while the VMs are powered on.You can change the memory and CPU configuration of your VMs by using the Acropolis CLI (aCLI), Prism Element (see Managing a VM (AHV) in the Prism Web Console Guide), or Prism Central (see Managing a VM (AHV and Self Service) in the Prism Central Guide).Memory OS Limitations On Linux operating systems, the Linux kernel might not make the hot-plugged memory online. GPU Pass-Through for Guest VMs

AHV hosts support GPU pass-through for guest VMs, allowing applications on VMs direct access to GPU resources. The Nutanix user interfaces provide a cluster-wide view of GPUs, allowing you to allocate any available GPU to a VM. You can also allocate multiple GPUs to a VM. However, in a pass-through configuration, only one VM can use a GPU at any given time. Host Selection Criteria for VMs with GPU Pass-Through When you power on a VM with GPU pass-through, the VM is started on the host that has the specified GPU, provided that the Acropolis Dynamic Scheduler determines that the host has sufficient resources to run the VM. If the specified GPU is available on more than one host, the Acropolis Dynamic Scheduler ensures that a host with sufficient resources is selected. Enabling or Disabling Console Support for vGPU VMs

Enable or disable console support for a VM with only one vGPU configured. Enabling console support for a VM with multiple vGPUs is not supported. Solution microVMs and nested virtualization

Is there the possibility of using the microVM concept in Nutanix? Are solutions like firecracker (https://firecracker-microvm.github.io/) possible with Nutanix?As I understand it is not possible to nested virtualization with Nutanix (https://next.nutanix.com/server-virtualization-27/nested-virtualization-33423), so is there any provision for a feature that enables the use of microVMs with Nutanix?

Hello,Is it possible to install OTP modules or agents on CVM/AHV? Is it possible to get OTP certification when logging in to CVM/AHV  ssh? After installing the OTP agent on the Guest VM, is OTP authentication possible when login to the VM ssh?Thank you.

Best way to power down an Hyper-V cluster for extended time or relocation

Are you going to have a planned power outage or relocation procedure that needs to shut down your Hyper-V cluster safely?   Maybe you have experienced this situation: We have a scheduled power outage at this location for Dec 31th. We are going to need to power everything down prior to the outage. What is the best way to safely power down the Hyper-V cluster? With Hyper-V Clusters it is important to consider the following procedure before shut down all the user VMs in the failover cluster : Make sure that you have at least one domain controller running outside of the Nutanix cluster. Otherwise, you will not be able to start VMs after powering on the cluster. Make sure that the Hyper-V hosts are configured to use this external DC/DNS server. Reported Issue: Nutanix has identified an issue Windows VMs may crash and reboot unexpectedly hosted on AHV Cluster with following bug checks: CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION (0x109)             ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY (0xFC)  Solution: If you are experiencing above issue, Nutanix recommends upgrading to AHV Version 20190916.231 or later. Tweaking performance of vNICs on VMs

​Processing power doubles endlessly, it seems, and become less and less expensive. Applications, at the same time, are developed with less of resources efficiency in mind and thus demand more and more resources. And so the spiral grows. While in most cases it is not an issue and performance is not impacted in some instances you have to squeeze performance out of your environment. Possible scenarios include:VMs or applications where traffic packets are relatively large. VMs/apps with multiple concurrent connections, where network traffic moves between guest VMs on the same host, guest VMs across hosts or to the hosts themselves, or from guest VMs to an external system. To provide relief to vNIC RX packet drop rate increases (per KB 4540 - Handling packet drops from vNICs in AHV) where CPU contention of guest/host has already been ruled out.For those particular instances, there is a solution. This is not a “turbo” button. Data service IP vs direct attach when connecting Volumes

When I searched the documentation, it was said that scsi-3 pr3 is supported when attaching volume from AOS 5.17.my curiosity1. In versions prior to 5.17, when allocating a shared volume for vm redundancy configuration, if you use Attach instead of using iscsi-initiator, does it not work?2. Considering I/O speed and stability, which do you think is better, mounting a volume through iscsi-initiator or connecting to a VM as a direct attach?

Self Service VM Customization

I want to introduce Self-Service VM operations via Prism Central for our end-users (do not have CALM). So, I’ve used cloud-init (Linux VMs) and cloudbase-init (Windows VMs) along with customization code (Python) to deliver this Self-Service VM provisioning experience. P2V SQL servers to Nutanix

Hi Folks,I want to virtualise 2 SQL servers on Cisco UCS hardware to Nutanix. I found references for Xtract for DB, however it seems it is a legacy tool as I am not able to get much information on it. Nutanix ‘Move’ seems to be used for VM migration.On Nutanix I have ESXi, so i know we can use ‘Vmware Converter’, but I would like to know if there is any solution from Nutanix for this.Can some one please guide me about the ways I can achieve this P2V of SQL servers?
