5 Essential Tips for Maximizing Your Experience at Nutanix .NEXT for Bloggers
There will be a 6.5.1 release fairly soon and it will be possible to upgrade to it from 5.20.4.6.
It is not supported to create any additional users on the CVMs or AHV hosts. Technically, it is possible to use traditional Linux tools (useradd) to create a user, but such user will be quite useless, because most of the Nutanix services and internal tools are bound to nutanix/admin users. Moreover, if you create any user on a CVM, that user will be deleted by the upgrade process next time you upgrade the AOS.
We do not share exact release dates, because the releases often get postponed if the QA team finds any issues during the testing. I can only share that we are expecting 6.5.1 to be released really soon.
Generally, Inline compression works very well for almost any workloads. It can be pretty much always enabled.Deduplication (both cache and capacity) should only be enabled for VDI with persistent desktops. Another use case can be when there are a lot of similar application servers without a lot of data processing. Everything else does not benefit well from deduplication and it can actually make performance worse, because it creates fingerprints for all deduplicated data and stores them in the metadata. That creates some overhead. I recommend to keep it turned off unless it is VDI and persistent desktops are used. Never use deduplication for SQL, Oracle or any other databases as well as any high I/O performance applications.EC-X is good for some backup storage, archival solutions, Files/Objects. Also, don’t use it for databases and high I/O performance apps.
Hi Adel, the detailed information is available in the following KB article: https://portal.nutanix.com/kb/5505 In short, you can switch between LTS and STS, but only to a newer version. Right now (as of 4th of January 2023), the latest version is 6.5.1.8 LTS. There will be soon the version 6.6 STS. If you upgrade to 6.6 STS, you will not be able to go back to 6.5.x LTS versions, because that would be a downgrade and downgrades are not supported. You will only be able to go to LTS when the next LTS is released (most likely it will be 6.10.x, but not yet confirmed). If you are on an earlier STS version now, for example, 6.1 STS, you can simply upgrade to the newer LTS, which is 6.5.1.8 for example.
Nutanix currently does not support adding HDDs to all-flash nodes. That can be potentially dangerous and may lead to unpredicted issues.Previous replies in this thread should be treated as outdated and incorrect.
