Hi mikemaggio,

Have you seen this post Want to export a VM from AHV? Here’s how? It has an overview of the process and the KBs that explain the steps in details.

Let me know if that helps.

I’ve taken a brief look. Looks like this addresses moving from one hypervisor to another. We are not changing hypervisors just going from one AHV environment to another.

KB-3577 AHV | How to access VM disk files on Nutanix container goes over exporting and importing of the VM disks from and to AHV.

How to download VM disk files from Nutanix container to your workstation

  1. Power off user VM, which disks will be exported, to avoid data corruption.
  2. Using WinSCP, connect to a CVM using SFTP protocol and port 2222 using Prism element credentials.
Note: If AOS version is 5.5.X connection may fail, please check KB 5082 for details.
  3. Enable the option to show hidden files by going to Options > Preferences > Panels and then selecting the “Show hidden files”  option under the common settings.
  4. Navigate to the path that was found in Step 1. You can download required files from Nutanix container to your local PC now.

Thanks Alona. I was able to figure this out yesterday. Now I just need to figure out how to upload the files to the new environment.

Hi mikemaggio,

Glad to hear that. Is the new environment a dark site?
If not then download files to the machine that has access to both sites? Or is it not an option?

No, it’s not a dark site. We will download the files to a hard drive and then upload them to the new site. Is there something else we need to do after we upload the files? Sorry, I'm new to Nutanix.

Thanks for all the help.

Mike

Please do not be sorry, I’m more than happy to help.

If there is a workstation (virtual or physical) aka a jump host with connections to both sites you don’t need a hard drive. Download it from site A to the workstation and upload it to site B from the same workstation.

Once you upload the file to the site B container you still need to create the VM.
You can either register the file as an Image as described here Prism Web Console: Configuring Images

Or you can indicate the path to the file when creating the VM as described here (4e. ADSF option Prism Web Console: Creating a VM (AHV).
