You'll struggle with only 24GB of ram I'm afraid.

Can your box take more RAM?

Since the memory is DDR3 I have been unable to find larger memory sticks than 4Gb so I’m not sure. I’m trying to do this as cheap as possible and have managed to get most of the hardware for this PC free I’m not willing to spend to much money on this machine if I’m doomed because of to old CPU.  Also, do I need to have 2 NICs in the machine if I am not going to have a cluster.

Without a cluster (single node cluster, rf1) you cant do much with it. But 1 nic is enough. That will work. 

Have installed or at least tried to install but not working.  Can ssh into the server but these services fail to start so I guess my hardware is to old.
