VStore Data Protection | Nutanix Community

VStore refers to a separate mount point that is created with its own NFS namespace in a storage container.

VStore Protection Domain

The namespace of a VStore is mapped to the protection domain when you protect the VStore. Such a protection domain is termed as VStore protection domain.

A VStore protection domain allows you to protect the VStore. You can also unprotect the protected VStore. Files in a protected VStore are replicated to a remote site at a defined frequency. You can recover these files from the remote site in the event of a disaster.

A Nearsync replication schedule of as little as 20 seconds to protect a VStore can be configured.

VStore Mapping for Data Protection

Nutanix recommends mapping the VStore container in the primary site to a container in the remote site. If a container containing a protected VStore in the primary site is not mapped to a specific container in the remote site, the container in the primary site is automatically mapped to the default (Self-Service) container in the remote site.

If you need to configure a VStore mapping for a protected VStore (for example, you add, remove or modify the VStore mappings), then:

  1. Unprotect the VStore list

  2. Reconfigure the VStore mapping

  3. Protect the VStore

VStore mapping can be configured while configuring or modifying the remote site.

Considerations for VStore Data Protection

  • Use nCLI to list the VStore entities on the cluster and to protect or unprotect a VStore.

  • Add the VMs or entities you need to protect the VStore protection domain that is created after you protect the VStore. You must use nCLI only to add or remove entities from a VStore protection domain.

  • Unprotect the VStore before you add , remove or modify the VStore mappings applied to the VStore. Protect the VStore again after completing the VStore mapping changes.

  • You can protect these maximum number of files using one VStore. NCC health check verifies if these thresholds are met. If exceeded, NCC raises a Warning alert indicating a possibility of performance degradation. A number of factors including VMware log file creation during processes can increase the number of files in the VStore.

  • Self-service restore is not supported for VStore protection domains.

  • To use VStore with VMware SRM, you need the Nutanix SRA version corresponding to the VMware SRM version.
