Deleting old VMs older than 2 years | Nutanix Community

Hello everyone,

I currently have several old VMs that have been turned off for more than 2 years. No one in my workplace can tell me or remember what are they for. I am considering deleting them (to release storage), but before doing that is there something I should check before? Could those VMs be connected with online VMs in anyway for production?

Could I take a useful snapshot, even though I will delete the VM afterwards?

Hey @MiguelMartinez

I think if those VMs have been powered off for that long, chances are, you will never need them again. They only consume storage as they are powered off and you can see in Prism how much storage they are really consuming. If you really want to reclaim that storage, I recommend storing a backup of those VMs on some external device so you can truly release that storage from your Nutanix. Yes you can create a restore point using the “Data Protection” menu and that would allow you to recover those VMs in the future even after you have deleted them but that restore data will still be stored in your Nutanix so it kind of defeats the purpose. The good news is - You have plenty of options :)
