Nutanix CE installation failing to extract nos.tar

Attempting to install CE 6.5.2 (single node bare metal) and running into an error uncompressing nos.tar. I attempted to run the command manually and am still running into an error.

Attempts to manually run the command and extract the contents result in the following:

I have attempted to run the installer with multiple USB drives (new and name brand). Re-downloaded iso multiple times (md5 hash is correct). Any ideas would be appreciated.

Have you checked that md5sum of your image?  If you’ve used multiple USB drives and it still doesn’t work then your image is probably corrupt in some way, especially with it saying “invalid compressed data--crc error”

I would redownload, write to a new USB using Rufus or UNetBootin and then go from there.   If that is the process you are following what version of Rufus or UNetBootin are you using?

I did check the md5sum. Downloaded multiple times (checking the hash each time). I tried multiple usb flash drives even ordering a new one. I’m using Rufus 4.4. Never had an issue with Rufus and had no issues with burning two other bootable images to flash drives and using them over the weekend (RHEL installation and an esxi install) over the weekend.

That’s extremely strange.   We’ve had some issues with different (old) versions of rufus, and I’ve confirmed that I use 4.4, so that’s not the issue, and your MD5sum matches, so your image is good.  That leaves us to a hardware challenge of some type.

What kind of hardware are you using from a platform perspective?  Are you plugged into a USB3 port?   If the system has front or rear ports, try using the opposite of what you’re using to get onto a different USB bridge maybe?   

When it fails, take a look at the output of ‘dmesg’ and see if you’re getting any bus or hardware errors?

Hardware issue causing a tar to not decompress from cli? That would be a new one for me. USB 2.0 128Gb Sandisk plugged into a USB 2.0 port on the back (tried both). Good suggestion trying the top ports. I’m in a training at the moment, doing this and regular work load and using both monitors at the moment. I should get a break here soon when I can give it a whirl. 

Just to make sure, I also downloaded unetbootin, re-downloaded the image (md5sum is fine) and did a full reformat and burning the image to disk. 

 

Hardware isn’t the best for virtualization, but it’s what i’ve got to test with at the moment. I’m using a machine I built from the Microcenter anniversary sale a few years ago. Rough recollection of what is in the machine is below. Going off of memory which is getting worse by the day haha. 

 

Intel Core i7 (Rocket Lake I believe)

Asus Z590p wifi w/ on board graphics (can’t recall)

a couple of inland 1Tb nvme and a 2 or 4Tb SSD

48Gb GSKILL RAM.

SHould be fine, the only other concern might be the NIC on that motherboard.  2.5G NIC drivers are a bit all over the place in the Linux world and depending on the firmware and revision they may cause trouble or may not.   It might be worthwile to pick up a super cheap intel based PCIe NIC card that is 1G to put in there.

Also, make sure the drive you’re going to install the hypervisor on is the smallest in the system.  I use a little 128GB NVMe drive for my hypervisor boot also on a PCIe card.   There’s a known bug in the installer that may cause the install to fail if that’s not the case.

I am actually using a 1Gb broadcom PCIE NIC instead of the 2.5gb one (forgot to include that above). Thanks for the advice on which drive to install on. I checked and this system has two 1Tb nvme and two 1Tb sssd’s installed at the moment. 

Re-Install failed at the same spot…

Edited the last answer to include it earlier, but here are the steps I just took and got the same error:

Fully reformatted (not quick format) USB 2.0 sandisk 128G

Used Unetbootin to burn freshly downloaded, and md5sum confirmed, image to the disk.

Booted using the top mounted 2.0 ports instead of the back ports

Failed at same steps

Hardware causing I/O errors is not uncommon, especially for the USB bus.      There does seem to be a few checkstop errors in the dmesg from a processor perspective but they’re recovered.   What also concerns me is that it’s failing when trying to extract the nos tarball into memory.  

I know you said you have 48GB of memory in the system.   With it booted up can you confirm that it actually sees all 48GB of memory, and possibly run memtest86 against your system.   I’m wondering if you have a bad DIMM that might be causing this issue?

Outside of that I’m sorry but I’m at a loss.  Never seen this type of failure in any of our testing without it being something hardware related.

I finally got some time to revisit this tonight. Found the issue in about 10 minutes (spoiler alert, and not a shocker, I’m an idiot)…

 

Nothing like checking the RAM is physically seated and realizing you don’t have the modules (two 8G and two 16G) paired in the wrong slots. Swapped modules to the correct slots and poof… installed with zero issues. Appreciate all the assistance. Extracting the nos.tar had to be pushing data into memory where it wasn’t paired correctly.
