Nutanix Files :- Exports and Shares Basics | Nutanix Community
Skip to main content

There are two types of SMB shares and NFS exports.

SMB shares:

  1. Distributed (previously called home).
  2. Standard (previously called general).

NFS exports:

  1. Distributed (previously called sharded).
  2. Standard (previously called nonsharded).

A standard share is an SMB share or NFS export hosted by a single FSVM. A distributed share spreads the workload by distributing the hosting of top-level directories across FSVMs, which also simplifies administration.

Distributed shares and exports don’t allow files in the root. Unlike distributed shares and exports, standard shares and exports can store files in the root of the directory.

There are a few other Differences & Similarities from reading the documentation:

Distributed shares

  • Must use Nutanix Files MMC plugin to manage share permissions
  • Cannot be changed to “Standard” share
  • Default permissions are: Domain Admins:Full access, Domain user: Read only, Creator Owner: Full access (inherited only)
  • Can support Nested Shares

Standard shares

  • Can use Microsoft’s MMC “Shares” add-in to manage Files cluster (see sessions/open files, and list uses.)
  • Can be changed to a Distributed Share
  • Default permissions are: Domain Admins:Full access, Domain user: Full Access, Creator Owner: Full access (inherited only)
  • Does not support nested shares

Similar items:

  • As of 3.5.1 both support shares to be DFS-N folder targets
  • As of 3.5, Encryption
  • Use Nutanix Files MMC add-on to manage shares

That’s correct.

Sorry: can the SMB and NFS protocols be used simultaneously, for example, to change files in a Linux machine and then view the changes in a Windows mounting the same share via SMB?

This is a critical question used as an advantage by some storage vendors that allow that.

Thanks!
