Next Community,

Nutanix has developed Best Practices for designing and deploying Cisco Unified Communications on Nutanix. I wanted to share those resources with you here in the community and use this space to talk about the subject.

Best Practices Guide with example deployments:http://go.nutanix.com/bpg-cisco-unified-communications.html

Personal blog posts:http://bbbburns.com/blog/2014/12/nutanix-and-uc-part-1-introduction-and-overview/http://bbbburns.com/blog/2015/01/nutanix-and-uc-part-2-cisco-virtualization-requirements/http://bbbburns.com/blog/2015/01/nutanix-and-uc-part-3-cisco-uc-on-nutanix/http://bbbburns.com/blog/2015/02/nutanix-and-uc-part-4-vm-placement-and-system-sizing/

Please feel free to reach out to me via this community post. I have nearly a decade of experience designing, installing, and troubleshooting Cisco Unified Communications systems of all sizes.

I want to make sure your virtual deployment of Cisco UC on Nutanix is successful!

Here are some example questions:

  1. Will Cisco support this? (Yes 😉
  2. How does the Cisco docwiki section 3.2 on page X apply to Nutanix?
  3. I'm thinking of implementing Nutanix Metro Availability, how can I use this for Cisco UC?
  4. Cisco recommends processor X, what models of Nutanix servers meet this requirement?
You can find answers to a lot of these questions in all of the documents above - but anything you need clarification on feel free to ask here.

As of May 12th, 2020 the support status from Cisco has not changed. Please contact your Cisco account team to ask them about supporting hypervisors other than ESXi.

Good Afternoon,

Curious if there has been an update with regards to AHV Support for CUCM?  Specifically 11.5?

Appreciate any feedback.

Hi @FilipOlsen @jlackman - did you see the reply from @bbbburns ?

I've read a lot of the documentation on Cisco and Nutanix. Simple question that is not even addressed on the eBook from Nutanix that I can find;

Can you run the Cisco UC on the AHV hypervisor yes or no?

Much of the documentation implies ESX, but if a UC platform is a combination of RHEL and Windows servers, shouldn't it run on AHV with no problems?

Today, you cannot run Cisco UC on Nutanix AHV (Or Hyper-V, or XenServer) while also being supported by Cisco.

This is not a technical limitation, it is a support limitation. Cisco requires that their UC VMs run on very specific versions of ESXi that they perform full regression testing on.

There are some bits and pieces in the Cisco UC VMs that perform hardware checks at install time and boot time to verify you're running on an approved hypervisor. Typically this just presents a disclaimer that you have to acknowledge before the VM will boot. That often looks a bit like the following.

Is UCCX also supported ?

Filip, UCCX will run on Nutanix with ESXi. You can find the UCCX documents from Cisco here: https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/uc_system/virtualization/virtualization-cisco-unified-contact-center-express.html
I think @bbbburns can add some insight here
