The New Paradigm of Running Workloads in a Nutanix SDDC
Guest Blog by Franco Rizzo, Sr. Pre Sales Architect, TmaxSoft
In today’s economy, every organization is a technology company. Digital transformation enables organizations of all sizes to push competitive advantage by making use of the right technology to drive innovation and time-to-market.
Key to this is using the right hardware and software to simplify existing enterprise IT infrastructure, reduce cost and deploy innovative solutions to drive growth. However, at the heart of this lies a major challenge as organizations look for a flexible, agile solution for developers; one that scales and ensures the right economic model for the business to iterate, scale up or down based on demand, and one that delivers the required security, governance and compliance needed in today’s business environment while protecting legacy data – often the heartbeat of the enterprise.
According to Gartner, has stated that, “Data center architectures are going through a radical transformation brought on by enterprise workloads transitioning to the cloud. Without transformation, IT professionals will struggle to gain the competitive benefits and differentiation that cloud and hybrid-based architectures can deliver.” (Gartner’s 2017 Planning Guide for Data Center Modernization and Infrastructure Agility, October 2016).
For those of you who do not know us, TmaxSoftis the largest independent software company in South Korea, and our products provide the quality and performance demanded by traditional as well as private/hybrid cloud architectures.
We have a wide range of datacenter products, and we have forged a technical alliance with Nutanix specifically for our enterprise relational database Tibero, which provides the data security, data resiliency, and RDBMS compatibility necessary for large scale enterprise applications, but at half the cost of those similar.
Tibero is an enterprise RDBMS that delivers performance and scalability for both OLTP and OLAP workloads, enabling a new breed of applications that are able to utilize both transactional and analytical data in real time, making data immediately actionable. We understand the correlation between the length of time data is stored and the point it’s made actionable. Old data results in low relevance in today’s hyper-competitive, one-click world, where IoT and the immediate demand for information makes this critical.
So why does this matter?
Tibero bridges the gap between legacy relational databases and the new paradigm of running workloads in virtualized data centers and the cloud. Tibero allows enterprises to fully leverage their Nutanix investment by embracing a simple, true utilization licensing model similar to the subscription pricing you would expect in the cloud, while scaling with commodity hardware rather than expensive proprietary database servers.
Maximize Virtualization and Containers with Nutanix:
While virtualization has enabled server consolidation, businesses may see little or no reduction in associated software costs due to software vendors’ one-size-fits-all model of licensing software. The Tibero licensing model allows enterprises to fully maximize their virtualization investment by only licensing the cores associated to a given VM, rather than major vendor’s soft partition model of licensing 100 percent of the cores, regardless of how much of the resources the database consumes. This leads to real savings both in Capex and Opex, leading to dramatically lower TCO.
Server virtualization provided a variety of benefits, one of the biggest being the ability to consolidate applications onto a single system. Gone are the days of single application/single server, and virtualization ushered in cost savings through reduced footprint and faster server provisioning. Running workloads on Nutanix HCI virtualized stack, with either VMWare, Hyper-V or Nutanix’s own free KVM based hypervisor AHV, results in performance characteristics that are comparable to bare metal performance, while allowing for a high ratio of application consolidation and lower TCO.
The appeal for many CIOs is that as the data center itself is being refreshed, then surely the time is right to eradicate the legacy software silos of the past, reduce the overall licensing cost and help your business focus on transforming its operations without being tied down by the cumbersome, expensive databases and associated license models of the past.
So, with the move toward digital transformation speeding up within many organizations looking to achieve business agility, there is a growing realization that it can only be achieved by speeding up the delivery of infrastructure and application services. And in many cases, this means near total datacenter refreshes. It is the only way to embrace agile deployment models for rapid time to market and to eliminate IT bottlenecks.
There is no better time to relook at the high-footprint hardware lying around the data center, as well as taking a hard look at the total cost of ownership in relation to your software and applications. And there is no better place to begin, than by modernizing your database architecture with Tibero from TmaxSoft.
