Question

Windows Server 2016 is Slow or Laggy over AHV

Badge
Hi all, Has anyone noticed a performance issue when they installed Server 2016? When I launch the console its really choppy and sluggish. Even inside the OS its laggy. Fresh clean install to. 2 CPU and 4G ram.

2012 STD R2 seems pretty snappy but 2016 is kind of crap.

This is a new Nutanix setup so I am new to this. I have a ticket in but just seeing if I am the only one. I loaded it up on ESXi and it was fine so its got to be a Nutanix thing.

Thanks

How did you install server 2016? runs the os on the SCSI disk? or IDE
Is the new Nutanix environment up to date?

Supported guest os AHV: https://portal.nutanix.com/#/page/docs/details?targetId=AHV-Admin-Guide-v51:vmm-vm-driver-types-r.html

We are running multiple Windows Server 2016 on Nutanix AHV with no performance issues jsut as a FYI. Your support ticket should help focus in on the issue.

Hi Mverstoep,

I did a fresh OS using SCSI. This is a brand new Nutanix install. I have only 4 servers on it now. I am on the latest OS 5.8.1.

Jlackman, Nutanix support did not have an answer to this. Disappointing really. Why am I seeing this and no one else?

I got another install going in next week and it will be key to see how the serves are on it. I want to clarify the server seems to be running fine as far as stats but its the console part that's bad. the graphics. Its like waiting for a webpage to load over dialup. It paints the picture on the screen. On Server 2016 Standard to get to a login box it takes about 14 seconds to get to where I can type in my login account. It sucks really. 2012 R2 takes 6 seconds from clicking "Launch Console".

We have both migrated 2016 servers and built new 2016 servers and we don't see any difference in performance. are you talking about the console from PRISM, not RDP right? If you still have the ticket open, I would click on the "escalate" button. are you using the most recent VirtIO drivers?

Yea its the console that drags. I am using for NGT 1.3.0.0 and the Nutanix VM Mobility are 1.1.1.0. I made a video of what I am seeing. Let me know if this is normal.

Thanks!

Hi @muguccioni

How did you make out after escalating the ticket? ... be great if you could share a status here, it will help other community members who might have a similar issue. Thanks 👍

Hi @muguccioni

I think this might be a bug, but could you try the following and let me know:

Based on similar cases... update browser, clear cache, try different browser.

Thanks

Hi aluciani, I have tried other browsers and same thing. I know its not the Windows ISO either cuz it worked fine on ESX.

We installed our second Nutanix today which had 4 nodes rather than 3 and the graphic is still there but its much faster. I think the added node gives it some more horse power. But our 3 node sux plain and simple. I still need to follow up with Nutanix. I will post if they come up with anything.

have you install NGT tool (gust tool)

@muguccioni You obviously covered the VirtIO and NGT installation. We found a major issue on one of our client clusters with server 2016. Sluggish, unresponsive sometimes random bluescreens. We managed to resolve all of those issues by disabling receive segment coalescing. Give it a go and see if it help any.

Thanks all, for all the feedback, To follow-up on this post, So this whole laggy thing was really seen when I was accessing it remotely over our WAN. When we brought up our Nutanix cluster it was in our new building and everything was done remotely which is why it was so bad. There must be a lot of back and forth traffic that really was obvious when accessing the console over the WAN vs the LAN.

We are in the new building now and its a lot faster over the LAN to where its not really noticeable. We just have to remember when accessing it over the WAN the performance is degraded.

I tried your suggestion TheoSteyn and it had not difference on my side over the LAN but I will keep this in mind if we have crashes.
