Does anyone have some experience with running SAP on Nutanix, doesn't matter if it runs on HyperV or VMware. Oracle or MS SQL is ok.
Just looking for some feedback and best practices.

Kind regards

Hi Bart, I'm one of the Sr Solutions and Performance Engineers here that specialises in Business Critical Apps such as SAP, Oracle, SQL Server etc. To answer your question you can use either Hyper-V or vSphere, and you can use either SQL Server or Oracle. The various combinations work well on our platform. Being a scale out platform SAP is a very good match for Nutanix, especially with the combination of landscapes and different modules.

We have a number of customers running SAP in different parts of the world (including with Hyper-V and SQL Server). SQL Server for SAP is becoming a popular choice, mainly due to decreased maintenance costs vs Oracle. The important thing to validate is that the performance of the environment will meet your requirements of the database based on the node types you have or are selecting for SAP. Our SQL on Nutanix Best Practice guide can help with regard to how to set up SQL Server for best performance. I'm also working on an Oracle Best Practice guide that will be published shortly.

We are also aiming to publish guides for SAP for our platform in the near future and will make those available on our product info page - http://www.nutanix.com/resources/product-info/. Please let us know if we can be of more assistance. I'm sure your local Nutanix SE's would also be very keen to discuss your SAP requirements.

VMware Press recently published a book titled Virtualizing SQL Server with VMware: Doing IT Right, I was one of the co-authors of this book and it includes a section on Nutanix, and some information regarding SAP and SQL Server. It may be a useful resource for you.

Just wanted to let you know the VMware Best Practices Guide for SAP has recently been updated. It can be found here - http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/solutions/sap/SAP-Solutions-on-VMware-Best-Practices-Guide.pdf.

Hi

I was from HP Business Critical Solution, how about on SAP HANA? On the SAP HANA Appliance, there was an SKU's for Virtualize SAP HANA. I was checking the back end application that the Virtualize SAP HANA will use the VMware technology with running the SUSE Linux Platform to run the SAP HANA. therefore the SAP HANA is supported by VMware and the VMware is supported by Nutanix. Any clarification from or certificate from NUTANIX?

thanks

Hi ,

To run SAP HANA Virtualized for production it needs to be on a certified appliance, where the specific hardware running the VMware hypervisor has been certified by SAP and also by VMware. For non-production workloads you may be able to run on a non certified appliance, but you would need to check with SAP on supportability of this. SAP HANA has recently announced support for E5 processors, but previously it was only E7. At this stage Nutanix only has E5 processors in our platforms. Nutanix does not have any SAP HANA certified appliances at the moment, although it is in our plans to work with SAP in this area to develop a suitable appliance. I would recommend you contact your local Nutanix team for more information and we can let you know the situation as our plans develop.

Kind regards,

Michael

Hi ,

While we are working towards having a Nutanix Solution for SAP HANA it is not availble yet. We plan to develop a solution that leverages our web scale capabilities and combines that with improvments in end user experience for SAP environments. This will take some time, as will the necessary certification processes, which we are working with our partners and SAP on. No timeframe is availble at this stage. Public announcements will be made when there is some progress to announce. We can help customers experiment and evaluate non-production HANA instances on Nutanix where full SAP support is not required. This will be the case until full certification and support is availble from SAP and Nutanix.

Kind regards,

Michael

Are there any updates on the progress of the certification?

There are no updates as yet. We are still in the planning stages with SAP and our key partners on this initiative.

Is Nutanix a certified SAP partner?
Badge +1
Yes. Nutanix is a Certified SAP Partner for Netweaver and all Netweaver products, also includes Sybase products, even though they are under the HANA brand name. HANA DB is not certified yet on Nutanix. Also please note that Nutanix AHV is not certified or supported yet to run Netweaver applications. Only VMware and Hyper-V hypervisors are supported.
