Provisioning and Orchestration Across Multicloud

I am currently using Nutanix Calm API v3. After creating a crash-consistent VM recovery point using the POST endpoint /api/nutanix/v3/mh_vms/{vm_uuid}/snapshot and verifying that it exists on Prism Central, I attempted to revert the VM to this recovery point using the POST endpoint /api/nutanix/v3/mh_vms/{vm_uuid}/revert using the recovery point uuid in req body. The response has 200 status code but the task reference returned has task_uuid value of ‘something’. I also cannot see any alerts on PC indicating that the VM revert task has been attempted. May I know if anyone has experienced this issue before and how I might rectify this issue? Im not sure how to proceed since the API request appears to be successful. In particular, I would like to understand the circumstances under which Calm API returns tasks with uuid value of ‘something’. Thanks!
Hi all! This might not be a Nutanix Calm specific problem, but since I’m experiencing the problem within Calm I’m posting a question here (as well). :)I'm grabbing a VM definition using GET https://${PCHostAddress}:9440/api/nutanix/v3/vms/$VMUUID. I convert the payload to an object using ConvertFrom-Json, manipulate it using .Remove() to remove the Status section (among other things), and convert it back to JSON with ConvertTo-Json.When I send the modified payload back using PUT https://${PCHostAddress}:9440/api/nutanix/v3/vms/$VMUUID, I get a "(400) Bad Request." Thinking I screwed something up when modifying the payload, I removed the part of the code that changes the object but still got the same error, even though I'm "just" converting the unmodified payload from and to JSON.Sending back the payload without converting from and to JSON results in a "(422) UNPROCESSABLE ENTITY”, as it should. In this case the -Depth parameter isn't the culprit as far as I can tell (I've added -Depth 10
Hi.I’m the first to admit that I read the documentation for Calm a bit too quickly and didn’t really reflect on the meaning of “The Prism Central in which Nutanix Calm is running is registered with the same cluster.” and “Nutanix Calm is supported only on AHV and ESXi hypervisors on a Nutanix cluster.”After trying and failing to run this on an existing VMware cluster, that the Prism Central/Calm installation doesn’t own, I re-read the documentation and realized that I’d glossed over the actual requirements.I mention this to clarify that this isn’t a post about unclear documentation or incorrect requirements. I goofed, as simple as that. :)What I do want to know though is why these requirements exist. I have talked to my contacts at Nutanix and I so far I haven’t got a proper answer to this question. Can anyone please explain, in detail, why I can’t run Calm on an arbitrary VM?
Showback allows you to configure and monitor the resources cost of your application blueprint. Perform the following procedure to enable showbackBefore we begin:Ensure that Showback is applicable for Nutanix and VMware through vCenter platformsProcedure: Log on to Prism Central as an administrator. From the Prism Central UI, click Services > Calm Click the Settings icon on the left pane. Under the General tab, click the Enable showback toggle button. The Enable Showback window is displayed. Click the supported provider for which you want to define the cost. Configure the cost of the following resources. vCPU: In the vCPU field, enter the cost of vCPU consumption for each hour in dollars. The default value is $0.01 for each vCPU for each hour. Memory: In the Memory field, enter the cost of memory consumption for each hour in dollars. The default value is $0.01 for each GB of usage for each hour. Storage : In the Storage field, enter the cost of storage consumpti
I turned on a trial of calm in my cluster, but never really did anything with it. I’ve searched and searched but I’ve been unsuccessful in finding how to disable it. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!
Hi!I need help wrapping my head around how the while loop in Calm works. The documentation is unfortunately not helpful at all. :/The first thing I can’t understand is why a while loop has a fixed number of iterations. This to me is a for loop. A while loop runs while a condition isn’t met.The second thing that’s confusing is the exit condition that I can set to Success, Failure, or Don’t Care. I guess that Don’t Care turns the while loop into an actual for loop? The Success or Failure condition is as far as I can tell completely out of my hands as this is based on the result of the execution of the task(s) within the loop and not a parameter I control. Do I have to fail a task on purpose to keep the loop going if I choose Success as my exit condition? What happens if I have multiple tasks in the loop, do all tasks need to fail or succeed for the exit condition to trigger? Is it possible at all to set a parameter in one of my scripts and then use that as an exit condition? Thanks.
Hi Guys. Recently I made a S3 demo application which you can deploy in Nutanix Karbon using Calm, and it has web interface from where you can upload files directly to Nutanix S3 bucket. It's made using node.js platform. I tried to make everything streamlined using Nutanix Calm, so I made Docker Host, Docker Registry blueprints (Docker registry seeded blueprint, doesn't work because it doesn't save the the registry's password properly), docker image build Runbook pipeline and blueprint for deploying S3 demo application to Karbon cluster.Whole project can be found here and includes full step-by-step instructions guide - https://github.com/vildek/s3demo Article about the demo - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/building-s3-demo-application-nutanix-private-cloud-kaspars-vilde/?trackingId=7tjcuIKv0XKx95XEp%2FrD0w%3D%3D Hope this helps somebody understanding the platform better! Cheers.
Hi all!I’m guessing I’m missing something obvious here, but I can’t figure it out so I’m hoping that the community can give me a helping hand. :)I want to launch a blueprint using the /blueprints/{uuid}/launch API call as the “simple launch” call doesn’t do what I want. I want to automatically associate the new application with a project and as far as I can tell I have to use the “normal launch” for that.I grabbed the exact payload that Prism Central/Calm sends and have spent half a day trying to clean it up so that I can re-use it, but this is where I get nowhere. If I remove too much, I get an error directly from the API but most of the time I can submit the request without errors.Compounding the issue is that there is nothing showing in the Tasks-indicator in Prism Central, not even an error or a warning, after I sent in the call - there is simply no trace at all of the task I just created. If I check the pending launch details with the /blueprints/{uuid}/pending_launches/{launched_u
Is there Calm plug-in available for JIRA Service Desk like it is available for ServiceDesk. Need this to automate ITSM/ITOM processes in Nutanix infra. Use case - automating windows patch management workflow from JIRA Service Desk by integrating it with Calm and patching tool (ManageEngine’s Patch Manager+)
Hi to all,I’m trying to deploy systems using nutanix calm and blueprints, the guest vm are windows server 2019. Is possible changing the hostname of windows using the vmname generated by blueprint? Thanks in advance
Hi sir I have three devices. Model is NX-1175S-G8The networks of the three NXs will be connected to a 10G switch. This 10G switch will be connected to a 1G switch. Each NX is connected to the switch with two network cables. The function is to use NCM. However, after setting up more than 30 VMs, the network will be disconnected seriously. It is found that it will be stuck on the 10G switch. However, if the port connected to NX is limited to 1G, it will work normally. But the device will send out a warning message.CVM not uplinked to 10GbE NICIt was detected that the Nutanix packets were very large, causing the 10G switch to be unable to handle the load.(about 1.61Gbps)Because there is only one line going up to the 1G switchI have tried another brand of 10G switch, but the problem is the same.If the 10G switch and the 1G switch do not use lacpHow can I adjust the Nutanix network? Thanks Network traffic
Hi!I’m looking for an out of the box integration of AAP to import/install in the Self Service, to get inventories, credentials, job templates, … from our AAP, to be able to launch job templates from Self Service (and retrieve the result of jobs :)). This way I can automate some tasks, like post-provisioning tasks after VM deployment or some day2 actions.Regards,Fred
Hello,How to set RBAC on K8S with Calm, I created a new cluster Kubernetes and I want to add rbac permission for some users with task ...is it possible? thanks a lotCecilia
Hi all!I’m writing a runbook with tasks that needs to use different endpoints from different Nutanix Projects. This seems to be impossible, so I want to check in with the community to see if I’m doing something wrong. :)I can create an endpoint without “assigning” it to a specific project, but this doesn’t matter since I have to define a project when creating a runbook. This means that I can only use endpoints that are assigned to the project the runbook is using. An endpoint can only be assigned to one project so assigning an endpoint to multiple projects is not an option. One possible (as well as very clunky and cumbersome) workaround would be to create identical endpoints for every project that needs access to it, but all endpoints must be uniquely named which makes this even more of a nightmare. Is what I want to do at all possible? Thanks.
I would like to create variables that are reusable in blueprints - things like package store URI, proxy URL, etc. I don’t think it makes sense to define these in every blueprint, as they’re identical; we want to keep that kind of thing DRY.The docs state that Variable Types defined in the Library are reusable across blueprints. But if I define MY_VAR as a new Variable Type with a value, it has no value when expanded in a blueprint script as @@{MY_VAR}@@. What is the trick to defining these vars at the Library level and using them in Blueprints? Thanks!
Did you know that, as of Calm version 3.0 and later releases, all of your Calm data can now be backed-up? Previous versions of Calm, unfortunately, did not allow this functionality. All Calm data can now be backed-up to and restored from a single archive file. Taking a backup of the Calm data involves simply connecting to the Prism Central instance hosting the Calm service via CLI (i.e. via SSH), then connecting to the corresponding docker container (named “nucalm”) and executing a single command.More information regarding this procedure can be found within the “Taking Backup and Restoring Calm Data” section of the “Nutanix Calm Administration and Operations Guide”.
I am trying to figure out how to pass variables to a calm runbook through a JSON post via the API. /api/nutanix/v3/runbooks/runbooku_uid/run{ "kind": "runbook" "spec": { "args": [ { "name": "network_name", "value": "Test123" }]}}
Does any one know the syntax to get the first 3 characters of the project name ? The documentation is not clear. It talks about support for slicing for strings. For example, @@{foo[3:6]}@@, but it doesn’t seem to work.
I’ve recently upgraded to Calm 3.5.0 and now all the ‘shell script execution has failed with error eof’ Has anyone ran across this before?Thanks,-Joe
Hi,I used calm vm 3.7.2.2, it worked fine for a couple of days but now I receive error when deploy a blueprint and also when I tried to delete or soft delete the existing one.Nothing logged.
Hi all.I’m trying to get my Calm decision tasks to do what I want but I’m getting nowhere fast. :/How can I get a decision task to choose either ‘True’ or ‘False’ at the end of execution? Thanks!
Is there any kind of integration between Calm and VMware NSX-T? I would like to understand if there is the possibility to “completely automate” deployment of VMs (integration with vsphere) and network services.
Hi!I have a script in a runbook that dynamically executes a background job using another script, also placed on disk, but there is no output from that background job even if I explicitly ask for the result with Receive-Job.Here’s the code I run to execute the external script as a background job and then get the results:$job = Start-Job -FilePath $pathToScriptReceive-Job $jobThe runbook executes without problems but there is no output. If I use the following method to invoke the external script I get the expected output from the runbook:& $pathToScriptI would like to use background jobs though as there are benefits to that I’d like to use. Can I use background jobs with Calm and if so, how? Thanks.
Hi Community,We are working on enhancing our automation flows in Nutanix Self-Service blueprints and would like some guidance on the best way to approach two things:Enable memory overcommit automatically for every VM deployed from a blueprint: Our goal is that VMs should always have this applied at deployment time without requiring manual adjustment later. Ensure category assignment is mandatory for deployed VMs: We would like to implement a check so that if a VM doesn’t have a category assigned during creation, the workflow requires a category before it can proceed. Is there a preferable script type or approach for implementing these checks and automations within Self-Service? Any suggestions on best practices - especially regarding script selection - would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Hi everyone, I am trying to figure out a way to import projects into Prism. I got stuck when I read there is a limit for projects number based on the environment, with a maximum of 500 projects. Is there a way to have more than 500, specifically almost a 1000 and will probably be growing? Any advice here will be appreciated!
